"World of Warcraft Loses 1.3 Million Subscribers, Down To 8 Mil"

Source (Kotaku) Sure WoW still has a ton of subscribers, but it's starting to wind down. Thoughts on this?

  • It's the end of a tier and the next expac will be announced at Blizzcon. I already quit last year, but I'm sure others are waiting until the next xpac.

  • Surprised it isn't more. It's seriously gone downhill. I quit last year.

  • Only 8 Million left!? Oh no! That means they are only making around $120 Million now! :/ -_-... I bet Blizzard only has to start worrying if they lose a million a month or something like that.

  • Dont worry ... World of Halocarft will bring back some revenue to Activision ... all should be well. And then repeat it again in 2 years, plus the DLC and micro transaction revenues in between. Wonder how high the price will be for the top power weapons? Perhaps those lost subscribers are just saving up for some heavy weapons.

  • The only reason 8 million people are still on it is because they've sunk so much time on it. It is hard to quit because you say to yourself "I've spent so much time in this game, I'll have to start over someplace else" That is the mentality with MMOs, at least among higher level players. I never wanted to leave Runescape as a child to play WoW because I was a high level in Runescape and didn't want to reinvest all that time in another game (and be behind everyone who had played from the beginning). I eventually did make the switch, but when I got tired of WoW I faced the same problem.

  • Aren't they planning on releasing a new MMO soon anyway? Isn't it called Titan or something?

    • There are plenty better MMO's out there nowadays personally I like Tera and Eve but MMO's are all basically fetch quests and it gets boring fast when you are by yourself.

The game is 10 years old the numbers it has is phenomenal as is. They're rushing out content patches like crazy though. The newest Xpac came out in september and it's already halfway done. They want to make up for the disaster that was cataclysm. Most players hated it.

Not surprising. The game is 10 years old, it is to be expected. My only concern is that Blizzard will rush out a Burning Legion expansion (they are the "big bad guys" of WoW) next, to try and cash in on "killing the biggest baddie" before they release their unannounced MMO. I still want a naga expansion first.

          • Everquest was way better, and it's even free to play now. I still want to try Guild Wars II also, no paying for that game either.

          • It's had a long run, and it's still going strong.

          • Its an old game and MMO's are starting to decline in popularity. The paid subscription is a major turn off to today's gamers and once a game starts loosing its addicts it begins to die.

I can understand it, the last expansion changed a lot of things. I dont mind it though.

It's only inevitable. The game was released in 2004, I'm shocked it's been going on for as long as it has.

          • My thoughts on this is I'm amazed 8 million people are subscribed to an almost 10 year old game. It's going to go down eventually, the game is old as hell man. I'm even subscribed to WoW for some reason I haven't played it in weeks.
