18 year old arrested for same-sex relationship started when both were minors.

This is ridiculous and I'm struggling to see how this even happens. Where's the public interest argument?
A 17 year old and a 15 year old are in a relationship. One turns 18 and suddenly she's arrested? This is grade A stupidity, unenforceable and someone selectively applying the law in response to parents angry that their daughter prefers other girls. Honestly, how many parents would have done this to an 18 year old boyfriend?

As far as I know it's not illegal to date a minor, it's just illegal to engage in sexual activity with a minor. So, what's the problem?

3 RepliesGenders and sexuality aside, it really is stretching the age gap for an 18 year old to be with a 15 year old, or a 17 year old with a 14 year old. I can't say I'm in support of the older girl in that case.

I knew someone whose parents threatened to have her boyfriend charged with statutory -blam!- if he kept seeing their daughter. Also, they shouldn't convict for obvious reasons, even if I don't have a legal argument why.

I haven't seen parents arrest and 18 year old boyfriend but I've seen a lot force their kid to split up a relationship with one and vice versa with an 18 year old girlfriend. I mean I've had a friend get kicked out of her home for having a girlfriend but I mean they wouldn't arrest her...

I remember when i was 18, there was a guy who was dating someone in high school, and her parents did this to him, and had him charged with statutory -blam!- or something. They really didn't like him. I'm not sure how that ended. He didn't go to jail or anything, so maybe they just threatened him and didn't charge him.

Yeah, this is basically 100% bullshit. Homophobe parents trying to get an innocent girl jailed for "turning their daughter gay" even though THAT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE, AS IN, THAT NEVER HAPPENS, OH MY GOD, WHY ARE PEOPLE SO STUPID. I saw this before and almost posted it - you beat me to it.

1 ReplyWhat happened was, the two girls were under the age of consent, and it was fine. Then the older girl turned eighteen, while the other girl was still a minor, and now it wasn't fine. However, if the older girl had been 23 or under, and the younger girl 17 or older, that would also have been legally protected, even though it is still a case of an overage girl and an underage girl. So yeah, Floridian age of consent laws and statutory rape don't work.
