Edit: The pair were dating since the beginning of the school year at which time the girl who was arrested was 17. All parents were aware they were dating. The parents of the other girl pressed charges once she turned 18.

Absolutely ridiculous. Whether or not it should be frowned on is one thing, whether it should be illegal is something else entirely. This is one of those grey areas that should be left alone because there's no public interest in bringing charges. Either you give someone a record needlessly and interfere or you leave it alone and let a technically criminal (but consensual as far as the parties are concerned) act slide. I'm for the latter. The fact the parents waited until she turned 18 is ghastly. It's malicious and there was no previous reporting to the police before they turned 18, was there?
