I find that, in games like Reach, and Halo 4, the number of female spartans I observe is much more likely to be representative of how many girls are playing the game. And it appears to be a small number. On the same token, if everyone playing an MMO were their real gender, it would look like all of the women were abducted.
Granted I've heard of girls who play as boys to avoid the usual "look its a girl!" attention. I expect that over time girls will be come more accepting of video games and the proportions might start to even out. Maybe it will eventually stabilize at something like 30% female 70% male, of course that all depends on the type of game.
