I mean in games like Halo, not MMO's. In Halo 4 and in Reach you can barely tell the difference between male and female, its subtle. In those games, my observation is very few people have a female avatar, and that it is probably more representative to the female population. That's limited to Reach, and 4 though, and also my observation isn't exactly the most scientific.
Perhaps there should be a study done, showing the proportion of female avatars to male avatars in online games with respect to increases in "eye candy." Perhaps adjusted with what is believed to be the actual female population.
