^That picture is wrong.
1. The Pope never said that Catholicism states that Atheists can be saved by doing good things. He was saying we all have an inherent natural sense of good, and then he later said that Jesus died for everyone, not just Catholics (he was speaking to Catholics, not the press. He was reminding them to stop being seclusionists).
2. The statement the Vatican issued was clarifying the mistake of journalists, not the Pope. They did not supersede or contradict the Pope.
I don't care if you're religious or not. That's not the point of this thread. People seem to be going crazy over this subject, and this is just a reminder that according to Catholic doctrine, Atheists go to hell and good deeds don't mean shit without faith.
I don't associate myself with Catholicism, so don't direct your negativity at me, direct it at the moron journalists that misinterpreted the hell (pun) out of a recent sermon given by the Pope.
And here's a question: Why would any Atheist care what the Pope says about you being saved?
-
Popemon, gotta bless'em all.
-
The vatican has been filled with liars for years, this isnt a true christian hes going to hell
-
Why does anyone care at all what the joke of the vatican says regardless? They're a bunch of criminals and disgraceful human beings that would be spending eternity in any hell if one exists.
-
Because some atheists like to be trouble makers and hassle any and all Christians?
-
Atheists are control freaks. They rage at the thought of having Jesus or the church save them even if they are good people. Its because the church is doing something to them (saving) and they can't do anything about it. Not sure if that made sense.
-
i don't care as such. Just some find it hurtful when an entire community claims you should burn for eternity. It's like saying all christians should get cancer: it's mean
-
I don't think atheists even care, it's not like they're gonna put their faith in Catholicism just cause of this.
And here's a question: Why would any Atheist care what the Pope says about you being saved?
(Before the report was corrected) I personally thought it was a nice gesture and a welcome change of pace from the "accept our ultimate truth or burn in hell" doctrine that many seem to follow.

Edited by Verbatim: 5/31/2013 6:22:24 AM
Why would any Atheist care what the Pope says about you being saved?
Admittedly, the prospect of hell is still scary, and the idea that a lot of religious folk think some people deserve hell speaks volumes of how sadistic and cruel the human race really can be. A religious leader making the statement that nullifies the whole thing, then, is somewhat of a moral progression that I respect.
And here's a question: Why would any Atheist care what the Pope says about you being saved?
It's just a bit of a shock that the Pope isn't condemning us to Hell for a change.
