The Obama administration's seizure of millions of phone Verizon phone records under a secret court order is "alarming" and "beyond Orwellian," an American Civil Liberties Union official said Wednesday.
The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald reported on a secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court order that required Verizon to turn over information on all telephone calls both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other countries on an "ongoing, daily basis" until July 19. The order was issued on April 25.
“From a civil liberties perspective, the program could hardly be any more alarming," Jameel Jaffer, the deputy legal director of the ACLU, said in a statement. "It’s a program in which some untold number of innocent people have been put under the constant surveillance of government agents. It is beyond Orwellian, and it provides further evidence of the extent to which basic democratic rights are being surrendered in secret to the demands of unaccountable intelligence agencies.”
I hope that this is what really gets people more concerned about how the government can use people's phone and Internet records. Maybe that will lead to clearer laws and more transparency.

That makes me angry.

This is hilarious; I'm on Verizon, and my friend and I have been making early morning calls the last few weeks as if we were being tapped (part of some dumb joke). I'm probably going to be taken away tonight, if that's the case: bye everyone!
-
Rally Obama..... REALLY ! YOU CAN'T TRUST AMERICAN CITIZENS WTF IS THIS!!
-
I was going to post this story this morning with the article from Fox News just to see how many people would ignore/ call it a crazy conspiracy by nutty conservatives because Fox News relayed the Guardian's article. OT: I feel kinda sad that I'm not surprised by this. I lost faith in our government a long time ago.
-
Is there any particular reason why they're doing this? Or are they just doing it for no real cause?
-
Gotta love the government huh.
-
What happened to the right to privacy?
-
We all know its so they can fap to all our phone sex calls.
-
Then who was freedom? What happened to us being a Democracy? Who was phone?
-
Literally nothing our government does is in the interest of the people. I often wonder what it is our government actually does.
-
I refuse to own a cell phone.
-
Copyright/Lack of privacy has been overdone.
-
Lol >Doesn't have Verizon as his phone provider It still is a serious breach of privacy though.
