Marathon and Halo each had very specific main characters, however, to match up with the swords carriers. But Destiny has only the collective Guardians and no unifying main character. The only option I see is for the Traveler to fill this role, which probably means...

And featuring a likeable, inspiring protagonist to hold the AI would be a good move if Bungie wanted to create a story with characters you care about. So in my fantasies - a Destiny's Master Chief who would guide us through the story?
-
The guy in the white armor with the helmet talking to the PC in the cutscene after the reveal may be this guy.
-
So I guess he won't be just that kind of character who gives you a goal and says: "Do it"? Maybe we'll visit him often?
-
I gotta say I got bad vibes off this guy, though rationally thinking - he shouldn't be a bad guy. But maybe after I get to know him a bit more, that feeling will go away. I'm getting a feeling there'll be a lot of interesting characters!
-
A main character than wasn't the PC...?!!?!? hmmmmm interesting thought, maaaaybeee.
-
It seemed as a viable choice if one would decide to make the protagonist silent and without a face. So a main character that would lead you through the story wouldn't be bad. But as of now, we know the Guardian will indeed play an important role in the story. Or at least, it seems that way.

Keep in mind that Charlemagne sent a nameless knight to rescue Joyeuse. That knight will likely represent the playable character/guardians.
-
So maybe if the unnamed man in the white mask is Charlemagne's parallel and he used to rule over Mars after the traveller arrived, then was conquered by the Cabal (his greatest defeat). Now he is a prominent figure in the City, and will be sending us guardians to retrieve Joyeuse from his treasury. But did the nameless knight ever return with Joyeuse? And if so what did Charlemagne do with it once he had it again?
-
If Joyeuse was an AI or weapon ten it would make sense that we would all be sent to retrieve it and be able to use it since it is "Anyone's Sword"
-
A nameless knight, that's -blam!-in' clever, Bungie! Good catch.
