Why do people hate on Del Rio so much?

Yeah, he's an asshole, but look at it from his point of view: You're in charge of the biggest, most technologically advanced ship humanity has ever built. Thousands of people are on board. Then all of a sudden, the ship is dragged forcefully to a strange world and attacked by an unknown enemy. You and your crew barely survive, and there's an opening to retreat, report to command, and receive reinforcements. But a formerly MIA Spartan and his clearly rampant AI companion tell you to stay? Wouldn't you have the same reaction Del Rio did? I know Master Chief is a hero and all, but we don't know what the hell we're dealing with, and I sure as well wouldn't go in guns a blazing, unnecessarily risking the ship and the crew's lives. And he gets removed from command for that. What the hell?

  • It's straight up poor writing. I get it. 343 Industries wanted to make Lasky look sympathetic in comparison, and they wanted to show that Chief was committed to Cortana. They could have easily have done that without going "Let's create a one-dimensional character with NO redeeming qualities, and who's every line reeks of incompetence and insecurity". Even my Navy Dad thought he was an unrealistic character. "There's no way a person like that would ever be put in charge of a ship." There's no reason to defend Del Rio, he's a terrible character which is a shame because 343 Industries has shown that they can make some good characters like Tillsman.

  • Andrew Del Rio was a character designed to make Chief's loyalty to Cortana more evident. Why else would they make him the Captain of the Infinity, when Lasky was obviously a more capable choice? The fact that John defied Del Rio shows he's 100% committed to Cortana, which would later add a more devastating loss when
she dies.
Halo 4's story is actually quite good, but short. Oh, and I forgot. It isn't Bungie. So it must be bad.

  • He's flat as a board. *coughs* Character-wise that is.

    • Hmm...what if Chief had killed him? Del Rio attempts to grab the chip while Chief goes to insert it into his helmet. Del Rio grabs Chief's arm and Chief flinches, tossing him aside more forcefully than expected. Del Rio flies and hits a nearby wall, head first, and falls to the ground, not moving. Chief's like "Oh shit" and everyone else stares at him.

    • Exactly what I asked last night that I couldn't get an answer to. Was he really supposed to jeopardize himself owning literally the most massive ship built by humanity?

    • Probably since he is the eptiome of a clueless asshole. He doesn't seem to understand who the -blam!- MC is. Lord Hood was in a similar situation with Chief, but at least he was a somewhat cool guy and didn't go all douche-mode about it.

    • Well this jackass, Captain Del Rio, didn't use his head. The chief saved the -blam!-ing galaxy three times and the human home world once already. He DIDN'T need to order Chief to relinquish Cortana on the spot like that, he could have waited until they got home because clearly, they were in a bad situation, screw the UNSC regulations, lives are at stake. John is a seasoned soldier, a Master Chief, with the most advanced AI created by man at the time (even if it was going rampant). If John and Cortana have an idea, you might as well sit your ass down and listen.

      • Del Rio is an Asshole, you have a guy who has good intel and you think he's crazy because he's been missing for 4/5 years. The last time you see him in the game he looks unstable

Well, some of his lines are pretty funny. I've never had any real problems with how he was written, but, honestly, thinking about it, he could probably have been portrayed slightly better, because he isn't completely wrong if you look at it from his point of view, like you said.

      • We hate him because his character was designed to be hated. It's really not that difficult to figure out.

Because he's a boring one dimensional straw man whose sole purpose was to make Lasky look good. This is the -blam!-ing hero of the entire UNSC telling you that you need to stay and fight this thing.
