Halo was always on the Xbox, so the community was able to gather in one location under one or a two lobbies and play the same game on the same system. While it's nice that Bungie is going multi-platform, this will unfortunately cause a rift within the community.
How do you suppose we will handle these game nights and community carnages? What if there aren't enough regulars on one of the systems to support a lobby?

Cross platform would be pretty great. I wonder what the divide is looking like though since theyre having the exclusive PS4 content. Regardless tons of people will play on all consoles but of next gen im curious.

I'm sure they will do it how rockstar does their community events.

They should just connect all consoles. Playstation (3 and 4) and Xbox (360 and One) should just be connected by one network. As far-fetched as it sounds. That'd get rid of some fanboyism.

The choices... I was thinking about doing a tournament, but then I realized there is a significant number of sony fans on B.net now. That halted my decision

Whenever you do a game night, just have a PS4 lobby and an Xbone lobby. There will be enough players on both systems.

I doubt it would be that serious. Unless the group of people are to the point of no longer fanboys but vanguardians of their holy grail consoles. Shouldn't cause much of a negative rift but more positive. You only get the large amount of negativity from younger generations of gamers. Adolescent years in their midst of puberty.

Will there even be Community Carnage or Game Night? We're not even sure how PvP will work. I'm still not convinced that PS & Xbox will be able to hook up

They seem to be working on a way to get cross-platform multiplayer to work. All the data is gonna be hosted on their servers, so I don't see why not!
