So this was how Family Sharing was going to work.

This guy works for Microsoft and details how the sharing would work. Its a good read, and it sucks for the guy because he was excited about seeing the new system implemented.
First is family sharing, this feature is near and dear to me and I truly felt it would have helped the industry grow and make both gamers and developers happy. The premise is simple and elegant, when you buy your games for Xbox One, you can set any of them to be part of your shared library. Anyone who you deem to be family had access to these games regardless of where they are in the world. There was never any catch to that, they didn’t have to share the same billing address or physical address it could be anyone. When your family member accesses any of your games, they’re placed into a special demo mode. This demo mode in most cases would be the full game with a 15-45 minute timer and in some cases an hour. This allowed the person to play the game, get familiar with it then make a purchase if they wanted to. When the time limit was up they would automatically be prompted to the Marketplace so that they may order it if liked the game. We were toying around with a limit on the number of times members could access the shared game (as to discourage gamers from simply beating the game by doing multiple playthroughs). but we had not settled on an appropriate way of handling it. One thing we knew is that we wanted the experience to be seamless for both the person sharing and the family member benefiting. There weren’t many models of this system already in the wild other than Sony’s horrendous game sharing implementation, but it was clear their approach (if one could call it that) was not the way to go. Developers complained about the lost sales and gamers complained about overbearing DRM that punished those who didn’t share that implemented by publishers to quell gamers from taking advantage of a poorly thought out system. We wanted our family sharing plan to be something that was talked about and genuinely enjoyed by the masses as a way of inciting gamers to try new games.
• Meh, it wasn't worth the restrictions and DRM.

  • When I first heard of it I thought you would be able to actually share the game with each other. Now that we know that it's nothing, but a demo nothing of value was lost.

  • I would like this post to act as a way of me openly admitting that I was wrong, and shouldn't have expected such a feature from Microsoft. I could have sworn they'd stated that family sharing would mean you only need one copy of a game per household, but perhaps we were just misinformed. As it seems, nothing of value was lost, as demos have existed for years.

  • Wtf? Who cares, then, if it worked like that? I was a little upset about losing this feature, but nevermind that now.

    • If it was just going to be a timed demo, then good riddance. I want to be able to lend full games to my friends and let them lend full games to me.

    • Been saying there would have been a catch. Microsoft would never have allowed a system where you just share a $60 purchase with ten people.

      • I will get Xbox One if they leave like it is now. If not then I will get PS4.

      • Well that's not surprising about the fine details. There was always going to be a catch. Did people really think you could share one full game with 10 people? Lol.

      • I don't feel sorry for the guy at all. It was a scam in the end, not actual game sharing. Just a silly demo limit. GG MS, try again, I didn't fall for it.

      • It amazes me how people can still buy a console that was made to milk money from you. These "features" were just clever ploys to take more of your money and have restrictions. And what's funny is that most of these Xbox fans didn't even know this.

        • I'm disappointed that the sharing system was just this. I feel for him and for having something pulled out from under him but in all seriousness that wasn't much of a good start to the future. Just demos? Then again there is nothing to say if this guy truly is an employee.

          • So they cant just allow anyone to demo the game from the marketplace for an hour for free? Isn't that similar to what the PS4 is doing I think you can try the game a bit before you buy it. So why didn't Microsoft do that instead of this bullshit with family sharing. The trial aspect completely defeats the purpose of the sharing since I thought it was primarily designed for homes with more than one Xbox. So the big deal of this is, OMG you can DEMO a game for free because your friends have it! But wait! You still can't lend your game to your friend to play the whole way through because its another restriction! Isn't that awesome! Im now no longer disappointed this feature was removed. They should just allow gamers to demo each game directly from the marketplace for an hour. It would accomplish the same damn thing without needing any restrictions whatsoever.

Interesting piece; but what guy? Any confirmation this guy actually worked for Microsoft, let alone in xBoxOne development? - nothing in the article or the source to show he worked at Microsoft at all... ...and as a blogger, if I wanted to get my opinion out there; this would be a great way to do it.

            •
The difference between the family sharing and the typical store demo is that your progress is saved as if it was the full game, and the data that was installed for that shared game doesn’t need to be erased when they purchase the full game! It gave incentive to share your games among your peers, it gave games exposure, it allowed old games to still generate revenue for publishers. At the present time we’re no longer going forward with it, but it is not completely off the table. It is still possible to implement this with the digital downloaded versions of games, and in fact that’s the plan still as far as I’m aware.
Butane, you missed a bit. And therefore, mislead a few.

The guy goes into this whole vision that is actually very exciting. He should of talked about that instead of family sharing. It sounds like he wants everything to shift to digital markets. If consoles had that, money would go to developers instead of stores like gamestop, meaning cheaper, higher quality games. Imagine steam on consoles (steam might still be a middle man but to me its a lot cheaper then going to gamestop)! Plus, even PC would benefit. PC has been dragged down by the old consoles we have now, and a modern game market could bring things one step closer to faster growth in consoles. (The only one not benefiting are game stores. Think of what happened to Blockbuster when redbox and Netflix become popular) Too bad greed and people afraid of change are slowing the industry down. Instead of shifting the consoles to digital (which would remove the need for tons of DLC and things like online passes, because developers would be getting more money), everyone is clinging to the old (Used games, disc sharing). Digital DOES have its downsides though. >Because you can't share games. Microsoft realized this and decided to make a compromise. Developers aren't going to let them just hand out games for free. So they made the family sharing system. You can't have everything for free people, and while family sharing wasn't the best system, it was a good step forward. If we let them invest time it in, and introduce it to others to tinker with, I guarantee we would have gotten an amazing system from someone at some point (even if it wasn't Microsoft who thought of it). So if Microsoft made family sharing for digital games, its fine. If it was just supposed to be its own things, it kind of sucks. >Used games are cheaper. Sure, add up all the DLC, online passes, etc, and they aren't anymore. Whether you like it or not, used games hurt developers, and while we still have them developers aren't going to get rid of online passes and tons of expensive DLC that should have just come with the game. You don't want the extra stuff, and only the base game? Well without a middle man driving the price of games up the base game could have been a lot better. Yeah, sometimes used games will still be cheaper, but I think its worth getting rid of used games to get rid of all the gimmicks and add-ons we have now. Even though I'd love these changes and it seems I am mad people are bashing on xbox....I honestly agree with what seems to be the general opinion. Used games are not dead yet. Its just not the right time for digital to be pushed yet. It sucks, but next gen is just at an awkward timing (and it been so long since this gen came out it can't wait). We have all these awesome new generation ideas, but not the ability to implement them. Or, the people currently in the industry are just bad at making a good system and swaying the public's opinion. Plus, always-online can't work right now, internet isn't that widely available and being able to play offline is awesome. Next generation is going to be this one, just a lot more expensive and better hardware :/ Can't say I really wanted or excepted more though. TL;DR Used games are inferior, and these new ideas are nice, but I just don't think its time yet. People have showed they don't want change, they want their used games, so meh, guess things will stay the same way. Things are not advanced enough, and the people who should be pushing the new ideas are blowing it. Microsoft is stupid.

Wouldn't a single use timed demo with full/partial access that also gives you a marketplace prompt at the end be a better option? It could be possible since Microsoft is offering digital downloads on day one. Test drive the game and buy it when you're done. Avoid downloading the entire game over again since you've already downloaded it or most of it. Sounds simple...

              • Why not just release more demos? I still have those discs that McDonalds gave out for the PS1 back in like 1999/2000, each of which had between 5-7 lengthy demos on them...

                • So really in the end nothing of value was really lost. It is just a glorified demo nothing more nothing less, cant say what I was expecting but I was expecting more then just a demo.

I can't say I'm pleased about this switch. Yea the XB1 had some inconvenient policies, but I feel that it was moving the gaming industry forward in a good direction. If it didn't happen now, it would have happened 2-3 years from now. Instead of changing the invasive always-on Kinect, they removed this new feature, and now we're basically back to Gen 7 with 1080p and 60fps. Besides, I don't think they did this because of "fan feedback". More of "we need more pre-orders so we have to sweeten the deal". Either way, Microsoft wins no points from me. EDIT: On second thought, upon learning more about the cut features, it seems that M$oft was being sneaky again. Can't say I didn't expect it though. Still don't win points from me.

                  • I may be mistaken, but the people on your console with parental controls set up were able to play the full games as they are local to the system. Thus they could go to any other house and play the full games as well. Permissions. I believe that's why the 24 hour checks and the 1 hour checks. It was to let your family in your house have every permission of that game without the silliness. But that's just a speculation and probably wrong. I still like to think that's how it would've been. Thank you for all your nice name callings in advance. <3 you.
