It's a term used in philosophy and the sciences. It's a hypothesis which is added to a theory for the sole purpose of making it work. It's used in pseudoscience a lot. Someone may say, "If Leprechauns exist, how come noone ever sees them?" and the believer will say, "Well, it's because they're invisible".
