Absolute frustration with Google/ Chrome

I just got a new computer, a Lenovo with Windows 8 (Bleh I know) So the first order of business was to get IE off and Chrome and FF on. Now I haven't had problems with Firefox, but I keep having trouble with Google not wanting to use it's own damn service. My problem: I can't set Google search to my startup page. What I've tried: -Eliminating the other search engines by setting my default search to Google and deleting the other options. -Setting google search as my homepage -Uninstalling and re-installing.
