Because they could totally organize that while getting blown away and tossed around by the Force. And the Ark would get blown up by the Death Star anyway, so...

Alderaan: 12,500 km in diameter The Ark: 127,530 km in diameter The Ark could probably take a hit like that, I'm pretty sure there was even a shell of it left after Installation 04-2 was destroyed. And that's assuming the Ark doesn't have any shielding, and it probably does.
