Criticizing and making inappropriate comments on female member's appearances

Now before I begin, I know exactly what I'm getting myself into here. I'm prepared for the flaming and the insults, but I'm going to put on my brave face here, and finally say something which I believe has been on a lot of other member's minds, but nobody wants to speak up in fear of being ridiculed. Inappropriate I've noticed some people, if not a lot of people, on these forums somehow think criticizing, comparing, and making rather disgusting comments on a females appearance is okay. Now, I'm not sure what you guys talk about privately or around your "buds" in real life (I mean, I've discussed other people's appearances before to friends in a mature manner) however do you guys do so around the actual girls you're discussing? I'm assuming not, but if you do, seriously, learn better manners. I know we all like to sit around and post images of models and actresses then critic their looks. It's all in good fun, I acknowledge that and that's fine, but when you're doing so to girls that are SEEING your comments and you're well AWARE they're seeing your comments, what makes you think that's okay? What makes you think because these females post pictures of themselves, that you have the right to say you find them unattractive or compare them to one another? This is NOT okay behavior, and it doesn't matter how much you try to justify it, it never will be okay. If you went up to a girl in public and said "Meh. 5/10. Seen better", you'd be considered an asshole. If you went up to two girls in public and said one was better looking than the other, you're an asshole. Comment on a girl's picture on Facebook saying "You got a good body, your face on the other had...", you'd be considered an asshole. Just because you're anonymous and because these random females post pictures of themselves online, doesn't make you any less of an asshole. Sorry to inform you. Now before you all just start slurring comments such as; >"Well don't post pictures of yourself if you care so much!!!", (which still don't justify such horrible behavior) I don't care. I'm content with my appearance, and if I wasn't, no I wouldn't have had posted pictures of myself. It is all in good fun, and shouldn't be no different than a male member posting a picture. Looks are irrelevant on a internet forum. >"Don't be so insecure!" I can ensure you, I'm not. If I was I would have NEVER made a thread like this. I'm prepared for a ton of insults coming my way for simply making this thread. >"It's an opinion! Deal with it! I can say what I want online." Sometimes it's best to keep opinions to yourself. We all can be judgmental, and I'm definitely no angel myself, but I don't be going up to be people saying negative comments about things they cannot change. That would make me a mean person. It doesn't matter if you're online or in person, this is still mean. >"Like if someone posts art online, I'll tell them how I truly feel so they can improve!" Unlike art, you can't change your appearance, and seriously nobody say plastic surgery. This thread was made out of curiosity, and curiosity alone. I just want to know why you guys think this behavior is okay. I was going to keep this thread within TFS, but I don't think my main target members will be able to see it. I may regret doing so, but come on guys, for once show everyone we're not such a god awful shit-tier forum. I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!

You do realize that whenever someone posts a picture of themselves, they get an instant "You're ugly" or "You're hot" It's in no way restricted to female users on this website.* So stop treating it as a women's issue. That said, I agree with the general premise. Body shaming against anyone is bad. *Granted, I haven't viewed a picture thread on this site for a while. I'm just speaking from experience. Plus, I mostly post my picture on 4Chan, where everyone is an asshole. So my skin has been a little hardened.

  • Great post. The majority of people who are making those comments are the losers who can't get girls in the real world and then come onto this site to cry about why their 21 years of age and are virgins. Here's an idea, start treating people with a bit more civility and you'll find that people start liking you more.

While I agree with this, pointing out the fact you are a girl doesn't help. Sure, it's not fair that I can say I'm male without a risk of getting unwanted attention while you can't, but seeing as we're on an internet gaming forum (with the majority of it's members going to be male), with varying degrees of maturity, age (with again, a majority being in the hormonal teenage area), and other factors (personality, cultures, any deficiencies in the brain department, etc, etc), it is almost unsurprising that it happens. I don't think behavior like this is ok, but neither do I agree with various other things, and practically all of them are catered for, somewhere, on the internet. I can't send them all letters like this complaining about it, unfortunately.

    • So, I can't read 5 pages of "To Kill a Mockingbird" but I can read through all the comments in this thread. What the -blam!- brain? By the way, as some people have told you, jerks do what they do here online because there are no consequences of doing it, except getting banned (which they don't care). Plus an added wall of being anonymous.

Felicia, don't. You're doing the right thing for the wrong people. The Internet will not change. People are too afraid of being wrong to ever change. It's just the nature of idiocy.

          • The outstanding issue I have with the Flood regarding girls is their flat-out obsession with them. An anonymous internet forum is not the correct nor intelligent place to try out compliments and study the behavior of the opposite gender in the hopes that when you actually interact with a girl in person, you won't cream and shit your pants simultaneously. I don't do in-depth thinking into this issue like I do with others, so if someone easily pokes holes in my line of thinking or analysis, I'm not going to be surprised. As far as I've observed, it's an inevitable conclusion that a higher concentration of people here are less socially active than your average Joe. That's not to say everyone is, far from it, but the internet is the internet, it stereotypically houses a specific category of people, and sometimes you can back that up well. Consequently, a mean level of adequacy with interacting with girls might by a tad lower than average for the people of this forum. Anonymity provides a virtually repercussion-free outlet to cram as much attempts at wooing or just casual talking with women as you possibly can which, from what I've observed is usually the reason that any time a girl posts in a picture thread, a 75+ reply indication follows it. I can't get inside the heads of all the girls of the internet, let alone this forum, and figure out whether or not they think it's annoying. However, I know that if I was in their position, I would eventually get pissed off. Why? Because compliments are nice and all, but if you're responding to me only because of my genitalia, then you probably don't even give a damn about what I'm saying, you're just there to have the mental satisfaction of interacting with a girl.

                  • You can probably report them for harassment or something. I don't think posting pictures of yourself on B.net is a smart idea anyway, not that it should be an issue, but this is the internet. Obviously that doesn't solve the problem of people being assholes.

You know, if you don't want all that creepy attention, you shouldn't have a female name. Look at Gojira. I didn't know he was Muslim until he said he was celebrating Ramadan. He doesn't have his username as "Al Mujahid" or something because he isn't looking for special or extra attention. You are. You like the special treatment you get from some of the users here. The flirting. Otherwise you'd have a random name and go about your business. You may not be doing it on purpose, but you do get extra attention because you make the fact that you're female obvious. Again, I'm not judging or insulting you. But don't deny you get more attention than other users because you make it known that you are a female, sub consciously or not.
