So I picked up the Australian Gameinformer today on my travels and noticed an interview with Harold Ryan (Bungie President) within its pages.
I found the last 2 questions quite interesting.
How far can we travel in our spaceship? Are we stuck to the solar system?
I wouldn't use the word "stuck," but it takes a lot of effort to build those gameplay spaces and make them dynamic. We have shown a lot of planets, but we haven't yet said which ones you are going to go to in the first year of Destiny. We're going to provide a rich and full experience that will expand over time.

So rather than releasing a Destiny 2 or Destiny 3 the game will just expand?
We absolutely think of Destiny as an evolving growing world - it's alive. Its a place you go and visit. A place you belong to; a place where you can hang out with your friends and share experiences.
So it sounds like the DLC and sequels will unlock and expand new areas/planets while still preserving the older content. I thought that was quite interesting. I wonder if we will still be able to view all the planets on the map from the start - even though we won't be able to visit....bare in mind it's all a bit vague, I'm just thinking aloud.

I don't mind getting more planets over time. At the very least, we know that Bungie isn't trying to bite off more than they can chew by creating a ton of areas without content to match. Of course, we don't know how much content we're going to get with the areas they are creating, but I'm pretty confident they will do well with what they have.

Since enemy races are native to certain planets and maybe moons, I guess it's a good way to introduce new enemy or maybe even guardian races. 8 planets is too much for there concept to start with. This way would work in the long run and Bungie will make better quality gameplay and content. Its not that we wont get enough content, it's the curiosity to explore the other planets and locations we hear about will kill us. The confirmed locations include: Earth, Mars, Venus, the Moon and Europa. Just those will be enough. However Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos that will probably be explorable and all the abandoned satellites and spaceships. Those alone could be huge locations. Europa is Jupiter's moon so maybe Jupiter is next in line.

Good find!

I was looking forward to Destiny but then I realized that it will just be another Activision cash cow
-
I like the sound of that
-
I would be OK with that, I feel that would keep people coming back to the game and not rushing though and then let it sit for a long time.
-
Whether true or not, this isn't a big issue for me. As long as I'm playing Destiny, I don't care if I get one, two, or eight worlds. It'll all be beautiful and new. It's the unknown that I crave. The unexplored frontier. That's where you'll find this Vampire.
-
It sounds to me like comet 1 will "unlock" the rest of the planets.
-
as far as im aware, we have all the planets that have been mentioned(earth, mars, venus and the moon), and ofc the mythix get Uranus. i was under the impression that the DLC's we're going to be moons and asteroids..that kinda thing.

Edited by Stormy: 8/5/2013 5:47:17 PMHere is what I think. - Buy Destiny 1 -Buy DLC and get a moon or two with new missions.(and all the little fun stuff with it :D) - Buy Destiny 2 - This adds on to Destiny 1 - New planets, your character extends to the next game, new missions, storyline NPC characters, guns, and once again all the other little fun stuff :D. - To the point By Destiny 4 the whole solar system will be open to play in. ( I hope)

Those quotes don't seem to be confirming or denying anything.
-
Bu.... Buht..... thars microspofic life on Ploto
-
Maybe the planets they showed are the ones you can play on and the ones they didnt show are the ones on the next game and after that they go outside of the solar system
-
Kind of sucks that the graphics will stay the same for 10 years.
-
Interesting how he avoided the Destiny 2, 3 question. Now in the latest interview it came out that 4 games plus 4 major DLC expansions are still the plan. Curious to see if they use sequels as a carry through or stand alone games.
-
this doesn't bother me at all, whether they expand the game through DLC or sequels, i am happy with how it's shaping up atm
-
Very similar to MMOS.. actually the exact same as MMOs. I love it... brings back that old "expansion pack" feel.. instead of DLC. Only other game that I still play that uses expansion packs is WoW.
-
Comets..the expansions are called Comets.
-
A different interview (from E3 somewhere) implied that the first game would be based in our solar system, and that future games would expand beyond the solar system to completely new worlds.
-
I'd prefer Bungie take this approach. It's never been done before, and they're really aiming to change the way people play games...again.
-
I hope I can still travel a great deal of planets
-
As long as we can probe Uranus I'm happy.

Edited by DannyB513: 7/29/2013 4:33:28 PMIf they aren't, then all Bungie is doing is making Halo over again, because if you can't keep moving forward what is the point other than to play PVP.
-
I would like it if they only released DLC expansions instead of sequel titles, that be cool to just continue playing one title.
-
Yeah I'm not buying this. There's no way the sequels will simply be an expansion onto the game. The sequels I'm sure will be separately bought games, playable by themselves because it won't make sense financially; if you haven't played destiny 1, to play destiny 2 you'll need to get the first game, then the second, just to play the sequel? Also, him saying they haven't said which planets you can go to doesn't really mean much. It just means they haven't said yet. Do you have a link to this? The only interview I'm seeing come up between game informer and this guy is one that was filmed a day after E3

I think it's a pretty cool approach to building the destiny world. One plus, is that new players who pickup the destiny game wouldn't need to purchase the new content until they reach that part of the story unless they wanted it ready or something. So that in itself is really cool. Sometimes game developers understand a lot of new players join in their sequels without ever playing the part 1 of the games legacy. This pretty much takes care of that. New players wouldn't buy destiny and the new content and magically be ported to that campaign point of the game. However, they would have access to that planet though. If the game is not linear at all, it is quite possible the new players can port themselves directly to the new areas and start the campaign differently. Though I find that unlikely. This game is all about telling a story and living it, not getting cliff notes to skip to a certain chapter. There will probably be a main plot, and many sub plots within the story to take away the feeling of the game being considered a pipeline type of story play. This way the games got it's own massive irrigation system in the works, everything connected in a seamless flow. So you can be on a early chapter of the campaign mode, yet travel to a distant planet where the main campaign would normally take you towards the end, and instead of play the main plot perhaps be apart of a sub plot that still has references affiliated with the main plot. side missions, and main missions to progress story line. Some side missions will probably be affected by the story timeline. Meaning that different missions will probably be available or become unavailable depending on where you are at in the game if any of those missions involve main characters or alliances dependent to the mission. So I think it's a cool idea, and wouldn't have any negative affect on old vs new players.
