I bought Dead Space 1 and 2 during the summer sale, and just finished the first one. I had heard alot about these games, and that they were freaky the whole way through. While I don't deny a profound sense of vulnerability, or the fact that it was a great game, I couldn't help but feel less frightened than I should be. Thoughts?

Watch out. We got ourselves a badass....
-
Well no game is scary if you resist it. Why buy a horror game if you don't "let" yourself be scared. I'm not talking about pretending to be scared, or fake it, but really just succumb to the atmosphere and get immersed. It's all part of the fun.
-
The first one scares me because of all the fleshy brown colors of the Necromorphs and the Ishimura, and that it also makes me feel claustrophobic. The second one doesn't scare me because it's more open and I really like the colors they added :b

I never played Death Space

Edited by I Am The Guitar: 8/6/2013 6:10:21 PMMinecraft Mobs scare me more.
-
Metro last light was actually scarier than any of the dead spaces in my opinion.
-
From what I've heard, the first one was the only scary one. The rest were more of action games than horror games.
-
It's about the atmosphere, not "how much can I get scared by playing this". Seriously, Dead Space is very good at what it does.

Edited by brandorobot: 8/6/2013 3:20:42 PMThe ambience just sets you up to get scared. Playing with headphones on and hearing every slight whisper and dripping pipe.

I thought it was scary! Play on hard mode at night alone in the dark, never having known anything about the game. That's what made it scary for me. I didn't even know it was supposed to be scary. I just saw it was five bucks and heard it was good so I played it.

The first one is the only one that has a few legitimate scares, but mainly just a lot of cheap jump scares. The series gets increasingly less scary as it progresses, with DS2 mainly being a grating pain in the ass (dumbass Ubermorph thinks it's scary when really it's just annoying). DS3 I'm not even going to get into...
-
It keeps you on your toes, with a good jump scare here and there. It's not genuinely scary though. Amnesia, on the other hand... well that game just makes you shit yourself.
-
Still a great game though I decided to skip playing the first one and just buy Dead Space 2 and man was it good.
-
I'm inclined to agree. It's just jumpscares and gore.
-
Its survival horror but giving you power. While in games like Amnesia you don't really have power. Dead Space is great but you're not gonna feel frightened when you know you can easily kill. Be on edge? Oh yea that can happen. Genuine fear? Not so much.
-
You are hard to frighten.
-
Dead Space was my first Horror Game. Needless to say, I was pretty freaked out. That was back in 2010 though.
-
If you're frightened by Dead Space then I suggest you start playing E rated games. The Dead Space games are all great IMO, but they lack in scares and fright. Something they heavily advertise the game as. Dead Space had a great atmosphere, and Dead Space 2 and 3 had better gameplay. But none of them are scary.
-
I've never played them, but from what I've heard the games aren't so much scary as they are startling. It's more about things that jump out and go "Boo!" rather than deep-seated, get in your head, psychological, "Oh dear god, why did I play this at night?" horror. But I didn't play them, so what do I know.
-
You sir, are psychopathic if it didn't scare you like it should.
lol JK I don't mean to offend you.
-
It's supposed to be pop-up scary. And it sure was. It made me paranoid in the game and I wouldn't go walk by any vents or I couldn't go anywhere without shooting off limbs of dead bodies.
-
You need a headset turn off the lights and shut the door and sit close to the tv
-
Bear in mind that first and foremost they are sci-fi third person shooters - the games just also have horror aspects.
-
They were atmospheric, not scary, And I think they did that very well. I recently replayed the first 2 with my shiny new 5.1 surround sound and thought it was awesome.
-
Didn't scare anyone. Pretty good game series though.
-
Its still a great game. Just a bit too predictable.
