Syria: An Illegal War?

Does our (the American) jumping of the gun on Syria evoke warmongering in anyone's mind? Regardless of wether this just an aggressive 'told you so' on our part, or is a rash attempt to spur the American public and world into war; would jumping to conclusions and ignoring the UN Secretary's plea for more time effectively spawn an illegal war? Do we not, in this day and age, owe to the UN (if not the planet) at least the respect of allowing a legitimate investigation to be carried out? After the travesty brought on by Cheney's 1% rule; the resulting Iraqi Conflict, how can we expect the world to tolerate our blatant disregard for what should be considered a legal process? We (Americans) are sometimes shocked by the external world's perception of our lifestyle, culture, and government. We feel justified in most of our apathy, whatever flavor it may be, but should we really expect the world to overlook what could be an exact repeat of our last -pardon my french- war crime? Would our premature involvement in Syria be an 'illegal act,' is it our responsibility as a super power to acquiesce in UN processes? Is it not our goal, as intelligent creatures, to unify as a species under rationality? Or is this just an ploy by the US to save face while waiting for a UN ruling? Opinions? Objections? Outrage?

  • I'll be honest... I think I've given up caring. Both parties want to keep the military industrial complex alive and thriving. Both candidates may as well be the exact same guy, except for some minor taxation and benefit issues and maybe a handful of social issues.

    • I was talking about this in a sociology tutorial yesterday (a tutorial is the Australian equivalent of a class in university, and subsidises and continues on things presented in the subject's lectures) about whether there was actually evidence supporting the allegations against the Syrian head of government. Essentially, I was told that the UN is putting together a portfolio, and that the US is, yet again, jumping the gun, with Australia firmly sniffing it's asshole. Only thing I really know is Obama is still doing more things right with this issue than Bush did with Iraq.

          • We're fighting and arming people that butcher, shell, and gas civilians. The US is completely ignoring human rights violations and just wants to overthrow Assad.
