Frames per Second

I was wondering if some tech-savvy user could help me out. I have a couple of questions about the FPS (or Frames per Second) on Consoles, specifically the 360 and One. So, Call of Duty runs a solid 60 FPS, right? That's why it's so smooth. But if I were to go play, say, Crysis 2 on my 360, it would feel weird and unresponsive, correct? If so, is 60 FPS the highest FPS we've achieved? Is there a 90 FPS? Thanks :)

You can reach up too thousands of frames per second but you have to have a tv rate with refresh rate capable of displaying it. Most tv's are 60hz which means it can display 60fps essentially then there are 120hz which moves up to 120fps essentially then their is 240hz. You also have to have a machine capable of rendering that many frames. The xbox 360 and xbox one will NEVER EVER produce more than 60fps on current titles I can guarantee it. Also the human eye can only see about 63-68 frames on average so there is no real point to going higher. If you turn the lights in your room on and off 60 times each second the light is going to look like it is permanently on and not flashing even though it is, but your eyes cant keep up with it. Edit: Actually I was wrong the human eye can vary greatly on the frames it can see from 33-65.

I play minecraft at 300fps. It doesn't matter though, since it takes a keen eye to even notice the difference between 30 and 60 fps. There is essentially no difference after that, just wasted power.

      • Most Xbox games are 24 - 30 fps. COD is (of the top of my head) the only games that runs at more on a console. This is on consoles we are talking about though. I get about 120 fps on battlefield 3 on PC, about 200 on Diablo 3, about 180 on Path of Exile. This why, no offence to any next-gen console buyers, that when PC gamers mockingly point out console restrictions, especially on the new next gen models, it's because these consoles aren't really "next generation" - they are merely catching up to what a PC could do 5 years ago. Sure, they are better than the consoles we have now. But they are still restrictive in terms of what the technology can handle. This is further highlighted when consoles owners say that consoles are cheaper than PCs - yes they are, but to buy a PC that can run a game @ 1080p, 60fps it will cost you the same as a console, because it's actually not that impressive any more, especially when you factor in that PC can also add filtering effects, anti-aliasing, texture effects, buffering and sampling. /wall

        • Most screens can only show 60 FPS (60Hz). Some gaming monitors can show more, I know Asus has one that can show up to 144 FPS (144Hz). Consoles usually cap the framerate so it's locked to either 60 or 30. Halo 4 runs at 30 FPS and BO2 runs at 60FPS.

        • Some slower animation runs about 24-30. And that is for stuff like TV shows. But as for the games, unless you sit down and compare the two games side-by-side I doubt you'll notice much.

        • The Human eye sees anywhere between 30 and 60 FPS. Playing at a lower FPS would not make the game unresponsive, it'd make it choppy. Play CoD for about an hour then go play Halo. Halo looks UBER choppy.

        • I think going above 60fps would honestly be pointless.

        • Above 60FPS usually gives people headaches.

        • Past 60fps won't notice a difference. On consoles this is a whole new thing and we are likely to push the limits.

http://boallen.com/fps-compare.html Compares frames. Don't bother past 60 really, the reason people play high frames is so that drops aren't as noticable. 60fps to 40fps is better then 30fps to 20fps. So someone playing at (insert over 60fps) are basically set with a smooth looking game, drops won't be bad. Some monitors won't display over 60fps. Its all preference, some companies sacrifice graphics for consistent smooth frames.

          • There is pretty much no limit to how many frames per second one can achieve, however 60 FPS is where you can notice the smoothness. I don't know if you can tell a difference between 60 FPS and, say, 120 FPS, however.

Framerate is technically pretty limitless. It's just a matter of what the hardware of any given system is capable of. There are people playing games at 200 frames per second on PC.
