They should incorporate some form of DNA testing, prick your finger on the kinect or spit on the PSeye an it selects your gender based on your actual gender. Given the shared world shooterness of this game I would like to know who I'm playing with, I don't wanna see some smokin hot awoken hunter emerge from the mist only to voice chat and here some 10 year old boy or 40 year old man on the other side... Kinda jacks with the whole immersion thing...
That being said it, player freedom is paramount so do what you will, you transvestites you.

Or they could make it so, based on the gender, age, and other qualities of your in game character, it gives you a custom voice filter that makes you sound like your character. So in real life you could be the creepiest of creeperdudes and gave a really deep voice and all that, but in Destiny you could look and sound just like a sexy female awoken hunter. Maximum creepiness achieved.
