Apparently this 16 YO was clearing brush and forgot he had the pocket knife on him, he went to a football game at his high school, saw the "NO WEAPONS" sign, and handed it over to a security guard.
I would have either stashed it somewhere I could find it later, or not said anything. This kid has high-integrity and yet he got suspended for 10 days because he obeyed the rules.
Did he deserve the suspension?
IMO even if he had a bad reputation at the school he still was obeying the rules.
NOTE that the knife was probably a fixed blade, if he was clearing brush/setting up a hunting blind, but to fit in his pocket it would hardly be a machete.
This reminds me of the time my best friend went shooting with his dad years ago (he was like 11) and he wore the same pants to school the next day. I was in class when he realized he had a pocket full of live bullets! XD He turned them in and nothing happened, he graduated valedictorian and gave some stupid speech about liking the people he met in high school.

Edited by Dead FallingCP: 9/18/2013 9:24:24 PM"Here man, I forgot I had this with me." The guard's mind in a nutshell: "Hmmm, I haven't arrested anyone in a while, and my self esteem is quite low...." What happened: "GET DOWN ON THE GROUND YOU INSANE RASCAL LIBERAL WHATEVER!"

I find it funny zero tolerance policies punish honest people for following the rules while ignoring the people who bully and abuse other students who have a higher likelihood of one day snapping and actually committing a school shooting or killing. Priorities.
-
More importantly, who the fuck clears brush with a pocket knife?
-
Why on Earth would a student bring a pocket knife at school? Yes, he followed the rules, but the suspension was about bringing a weapon - a pocket knife, no less that can be easily hidden. The problem here isn't that the student followed the rules, but why would he bring a pocket knife at school?
-
A kid at my school was suspended for attacking a teacher with a metal pole; this is just plain retarded on the school's part.
-
Edited by TomoK12: 9/18/2013 11:23:11 PMWhy would someone be carrying a knife anyway? It's not third world...
-
Kind of like that time that one girl got suspended for creating chemical reaction in science class.
-
That's nothing... A few weeks after Sandy Hook, a 6 yo girl was suspended for bringing her hello kitty bubble gun to school. Also, a 2nd grad boy got suspended bc a teacher claimed he ate his pop tart into a shape of gun. A -blam!-ing pop tart!! Google: student suspended for poptart gun.
-
Zero tolerance policies are absolutely absurd. A few years ago, my little brother was suspended for, I shit you not, pretending a chicken nugget was a laser gun.
-
Kid: "Mom, I got suspended." Mom: "WHAT!? WHAT DID YOU DO!?" Kid: "I forgot I had a pocket knife on me, so I turned it into the securityguard."

Edited by Engrapadora: 9/18/2013 11:53:18 PMI got suspended for wearing pants to school because I don't have a license to carry a concealed weapon.
I'm talking about my penis.
If there was a scale that measured my respect and disappointment in the things people do, I'm pretty certain the disappointment-side would be in the basement of the building.

Edited by Winters Darkseid: 9/19/2013 1:06:34 AMWhat I got from this is that zero tolerance is dumd

Coming from a lawyer on one side of the issue (who is bound to be involved in suing the district), I have to be somewhat skeptical the events are true as told. If the kid truly did turn the knife over without prompting or before anyone else noticed, the school is in the wrong. If the security guard or another student noticed the knife before it was turned in, even if he didn't intend to bring it, I can see why they acted like they did.
-
He obeyed the rules? MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF HIM TO FURTHER ASSERT THE RULES!
-
"zero tolerance" policies are bullshit. I know someone who got in trouble for bringing a knife to cut food with -_-
-
All of the school's that do this kind of bullshit are just looking for attention.
-
No he didn't deserve the suspension, but he was kind of stupid for admitting it anyway. Unless there were metal detectors or something.
-
LOL. In my old high school, pretty much every person had a blade of some sort on them at all times. Mostly pocket knives and work knives, and no one ever so much as batted an eye. The only time it became a problem was when the principal called all the males into the auditorium to persuade us to quit playing with our knives when it was blatantly obvious. On topic, the kid would have been better off just keeping it on him and keeping his mouth shut. Or, if he felt that strongly about it, he would have been better suited returning the blade to his vehicle.
-
Student at my old school got suspended for driving to school with a shotgun locked in his truck for hunting and asking the teachers to let him go outside and give it to his parents who stopped by to pick it up.
-
My reaction to the school's reaction.
-
This is why zero tolerance is retarded
-
Well that was stupid of him. Did he expect to get off guilt-free?
-
Maybe he should have joined The Floof.
-
Not really - small knife plus he handed it in. Maybe sent home for the rest of the day but nothing that harsh. Plus of course it could set up a bad example: hand in stuff and you get a really harsh punishment.

i'm blaming libtards
