[quote]Pope Francis said the Catholic Church must shake off an obsession with teachings on abortion, contraception and homosexuality and become more merciful or risk the collapse of its entire moral edifice "like a house of cards".
In a dramatically blunt interview with an Italian Jesuit journal, Francis said the Church had "locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules" and should not be so prone to condemn.
In a remarkable change from his predecessor Benedict, who said homosexuality was an intrinsic disorder, Francis said that when homosexuals told him they were always condemned by the Church and felt "socially wounded", he told them "the Church does not want to do this".
He re-stated his comments first made on a plane returning from a visit to Brazil in July that he was not in a position to judge homosexuals who are of good will and in search of God. In the interview released on Thursday, he added: "Religion has the right to express its opinion in the service of the people, but God in creation has set us free. It is not possible to interfere spiritually in the life of a person."
The Church, he said, should see itself as "a field hospital after a battle" and try to heal the larger wounds of society and not be "obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently."

I whole-heartedly agree with the Pope and think he is what the world needs right now.
Your thoughts?
-
Is it possible for them to kick a pope out of office? If it is I think that's what they're gonna do to him. He's going against what most of the people who elected him believe in.
-
Nobody should condemn anyone. Even though I vehemently disagree with a huge amount of the Catholic doctrine, I think it's good that the Pope is trying to make the church seem more approachable.

Religion is for fgts

Well, if this stops even a single attack, suicide or other misfortune in or on the LGBT community, it was worth it. I wonder why the Vatican is taking such a drastic stance on a liberal issue. This IS the same organization that only recently apologized for saying it was heresy to publicly proclaim the Earth was round...

I think the pope is a false prophet.
-
It's a shame that nothing will change.
-
Where are all the anti-theists with their usual rants about how religion's purpose is to kill others?
-
He's trying too hard to appease general western society.
-
As a devout Catholic, I like this idea. I look at this as the church trying to adapt to current social ideas as the church always has done over time. Homosexuality is wrong in my opinion and I do not agree with it, but I do tolerate it as it's part of today's society more than ever before. The decision to go against God's will is between you and God.

I -blam!-ing love this pope.
-
Best Pope ever.
-
This pope is a badass...
-
A lot if people on this forum need to take a lesson from this guy.
-
tomorrow high ranking clergy members will "clarify" what he said.
-
If the rest of the church would agree with him I would maybe go back to the church, but most of them just try and change everything he says even though he is being how a Pope should be.
-
That new Pope is a pretty cool guy...
-
To bad nothing he says will actually happen. The rest of the cardinals and high priests have always rushed out and "corrected" him whenever he says something that opposes their doctrines and until the day comes where the church will actually follow through with what the current pope advocates the Catholic church will still be a corrupt and oppressive entity.
-
While the sentiment is nice, it doesn't change the fact that the Catholics believe what they believe.
-
yahoo news? really?
-
They're not changing any policy; Catholics still don't condone that stuff. All they're saying is that it's ineffective to convert people by focusing on a few polarizing issues.
-
I agree with him on most things, but not with his comment about our obsession with abortion. It is a heinous act that should only be carried out if the pregnancy endangers the mother's life.

So far this is what teh puma has gotten from the current pope: - Calls people to personally tell them that they need to chillax. - Says that the catholic church needs to focus more so on the poor/needy. - Says that the catholic church needs to stop worrying about abortion, contraception, and homosexuality. Whilst agreeing that these things need to be done, there seems to be more of a prevalence of talking, rather than doing. Maybe it is just the way news has been spreading, but there certainly seems to be almost nothing but reports on what the dude is saying, rather than what he is actually doing. It can make you anxious to see what they'll actually do, but if the reports keep being focused on the words rather than the actions, teh puma may never get to see anything that holds a larger significance. Talking about what needs to be done is all fine 'n dandy, but actually following through is obviously much better. Regardless, hopefully they'll actually be able to paint a better picture of themselves. Currently it is still hard to look at the words "catholic" and "priest", and not have the thought of them being rather... touchy feely with their younger "followers".

Edited by Elrond Hubbard: 9/20/2013 3:54:32 PMI was pretty certain when Benedict Ecks-Vee-Eye stepped down, he'd get replaced by some guy who's more radical than he was. So it's a pleasant surprise when the new guy, Pope Francis, wants to turn the church on its head just about. I had a bit of a smirk on my face when folks tried to spin his "Who am I to judge?" comments. Those scholars and whoever were like 'well, what he really meant was' as if they actually know what the Pope thinks. This recent interview confirms what I've been thinking all along: Pope Francis knows exactly what he's doing, and means exactly what he says.

Religion Wars IV: A new pope! I do like this new guy, he seems to be genuinely a nice person and hopefully he turns things around for the Catholics because lately all they do is preach about those 3 issues. It'd be nice to see them shut up and go and help feed the poor they are inadvertently persecuting with their doctrines. Not that all Christ-Chins do that, there are nice people out there too.

Good good. He just needs to give equality to women now.
