I think, at least in America, that smoking should be banned absolutely everywhere besides the privacy of your own home/property. Why? Smoking, and more specifically second hand smoke, has been proven to give a much higher risk for cancer. You could not smoke a day in your life and still have your chances increased because your coworker smokes a cigarette outside of the office everyday as you walk in. You could be behind a person smoking in their car in light traffic and get a dose of secondhand smoke. It is not in your control and their bad decision is affecting you in a negative way, and as of right now, there is nothing you can do about it.
So, I suggest banning smoking in public access areas, meaning everywhere except your own home or private property. Obviously smoke shops and other similar establishments that wish to allow smoking can, but they will need to be ventilated properly to 100% eliminate contaminating the air outside of their establishment.
What do you think?

Smoking is a luxury and it is for the supreme only. You guys should count yourself lucky if you manage to inhale someone else's smoke.
-
Smoking is clearly proven to be harmful to your health, and the health of people around you, yet you are allowed to smoke every on the streets of London. When I'm walking to work and I'm getting hit by the second hand smoke of people in front of me, it makes me think this is a good point.
-
I think it would be a little unfair to smokers by banning smoking outside of their private property.
-
I don't see why this hasn't happened yet. EU countries have laws like this already yeah?
-
Let people do what they want on public grounds. That's how it is the majority of the time anyway.
-
All said, doesn't American have any laws banning smoking in pubs/shops/etc? The UK implemented that in 2006; I'm a smoker and still think it's a great idea. If I'm ever inside for a long time and feel an urge to smoke I just break out the e-cig.

Wow OP way to stir up the Cazadore's nest.
-
Public places yes. Open spaces? No point due to dissipation.
-
Outside second hand smoke exposure isn't detrimental enough to do this.
-
I totally agree, having to walk behind or being close to people who smoke is the worst. It should be illegal to smoke outside where other people can be affected by it.
-
I hate smoking, but I am fine with the laws we have now regarding it. Not indoors, and away from entrances. That is good enough for me.

Edited by ODSTJacob: 10/8/2013 7:34:31 PMThe laws in NY are good. Around certain buildings one cannot smoke within 25ft of it's entrance. As a smoker, I find this rule to be fair.
-
Just keep the laws and restrictions the way they are. I can completely understand prohibiting smoking anywhere near a hospital. Not allowed in restaurants, so on and so forth. I'm glad you can still smoke in casinos and strip clubs. LOL.
-
Iv actually done studies on this myself for school. As you said second hand smoke is MUCH worse than actually smoking. And I agree with you on banning it. I hate at college having to walk through a designated smoking area to get where I have to go.

The average American can save over $500 a year by quitting
-
I know a lot of people wouldn't be happy as a result of this, but I support it.

Edited by Winters Darkseid: 10/6/2013 2:33:31 PMI kind of agree. If you're going to kill yourself through smoking, don't bring other people down with you.
-
How about we make the area withing 20 feet of you, wherever you are, an official smoking area
-
The ideal solution.
-
You can't just ban smoking (at least in its current state). You have to decrease usage and urge smokers to quit and others not to start. When the activity becomes extremely unpopular then ban it.
-
Just think if someone would have proposed this 60 years ago. Always moving in baby steps, but sooner or later the goal is reached.
-
This entire thread is just LOL.

Edited by cxkxr: 10/7/2013 3:04:01 PMConcern about 2nd hand in the open air is like worrying about getting carbon monoxide poisoning for standing in a parking lot.
-
That's a horrible idea. What if you're renting and you can't smoke inside your home? I think the laws are fine the way they are.
-
100% agree. I also think that no smoking in apartments unless your neighbors consent to it. Smoking is a bit ridiculous
