Infinity Ward: "Call of Duty is like a sport."
"There is the obvious truth that if this were football, and next year they decided we only want seven players a side and you can use your hands, I don't think people would want to go to many of those games," said Infinity Ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin. "So we can't change too many of the core rules, and the core rules are really simple," he added. "You're a player, it's in first-person, you have a weapon in your hand and you run around shooting other people."
Do you agree with this?

  • Rugby went from 2 towns murdering each other over a leather ball to 12 men either side on a field trying to reach the other side. Some times you gotta change, some CoD clearly doesn't understand.

  • No, it's not a sport when one person can stop an entire teams goal by himself.

  • He raises a valid point. If they were to change the core gameplay, it wouldn't be CoD anymore.

  • Then instead of calling it a new game, just keep making the same game with updates. This isn't COD 10. It's COD 4:episode 6.

    • I just hope they don't use this to not change at all in the future. Otherwise, I agree. Like PSU said, just look at Halo.

    • Yep. Just as eSports and Chess are sports.

    • I absoutley agree. This is why COD has millions and Halo has a 16k peak population. You CANNOT change the core gameplay. Halo did, and it died.

      • As much as people complain about games being "same-y" they piss and moan far more when things change. CoD does something it's fanbase enjoys and wisely doesn't change that.

      • So I guess that in response to criticism of CoD being the same every year? I agree to some extent. You can only change a game's core mechanics so much. I don't mean that in the same way he seems to though. You can only change a game's core mechanics so much that it still makes sense to label that game a continuation of a given franchise. It's hard to argue against him when he says,
"So we can't change too many of the core rules, and the core rules are really simple," he added. "You're a player, it's in first-person, you have a weapon in your hand and you run around shooting other people."
since running around with a weapon in hand is pretty broad. That said, I don't think anyone's seriously complaining about changing something as core as that. People seem to complain about balance issues a lot, but you don't see people arguing against the core.

      • In a sport all that matters is skill, strategy, teamwork, & lots of practice. In Call of Duty all that matters is lag compensation, getting host, cheats, boosting, & glitches. Strategy, teamwork, & practice are all just a waste of time... So no, these 2 are not even remotely similar.

      • It's true. A sport doesn't have to be based on physical prowess. Chess? ESports? They're considered sports.

          • The soldiers you are controlling are getting exercise but you certainly aren't. It turns out swinging a golf cub about burns a lot of calories so I guess I can let that one slide but certainly not video games. You can literally die from lack of exercise if you play enough.

          • I see where he's coming from, but he could have been a bit more specific with those "core rules", because they could describe any FPS right now.

          • I get what he's saying. Sports changed over time, but the core rules remand the same. They found a successful thing which is bringing in the people. Changing the core of it would risk loosing the majority of the people that are going to that sport. For example in Football replacing the kickoff with a throw would piss off a lot of people which would risk loosing them. CoD is the same way as sports. It changes the setting every now and then, but what makes up the game pretty much stays the same.

          • Yes. As far as the goal of the game goes, Infinity Ward knows what they are doing. They acknowledge that Call of Duty is a game with emphasis on competition and its rules should therefore stay consistent. I think more games should adopt that philosophy. When the game starts losing popularity, it doesn't necessarily mean the game needs to "keep up with the times" and start changing its mechanics. Maybe it's time for some other game with completely different mechanics to take its place as THE popular shooter that everybody plays. Of course, I wouldn't expect that attitude to last forever. Trends change, and eventually CoD will start losing popularity. At that point -- if not by Infinity Ward's own initiative, but forced by Activision -- all that will probably be forgotten and they will start doing all they can to stay relevant in the market.
