Do you ever do absurdly nice things for no apparent reason?

So earlier today, I was walking by a group of trees, when I noticed too late that a twig was hanging from a web in front of me. I walked through the web, took the twig off, and went about my day. A few minutes ago, I looked over where I'd thrown my sweatshirt down, and noticed one of the little spiders that lives in the trees around here crawling on it. I stopped my homework long enough to go look at it, when a familiar train of thought started. Why exactly would a god save us? So much of our debate is around whether or not a god exists, but less often is it asked why such a being would even care about us. When I brought it up last time, I drew the analogy to the programs that generate AI in video games. Compared to our level of existence, of awareness, those programs are nothing. We feel no pity for them the same way we feel no pity for any other random piece of silicon. Why then, would an omnipotent being capable of creating and maintaining all of creation have any pity for beings with awareness as relatively (to a god) limited as ours? So I guess this may have informed my thinking when I decided to catch the spider, walk down six flights of stairs, and carry it two blocks away to the trees where I ran into it. A vague hope that, as I am to the spider, perhaps a god could be to me. That if I ever stood in judgement before one, I could point to my actions and claim that I was of a similar senseless benevolence. It may have also been because I really didn't want to look at a particularly nasty Differential Equation anymore. Now I know it's magical thinking, and it's the basis for some of the nuttier parts of religion, but if everyone thought this way, wouldn't the world be a better place? No. Of course not. Chaos is the only rule to this plane of reality. The spider I "saved" could easily have been eaten during the time it took to type this. It could have attacked another bug, or perhaps the delay I caused when crossing the street caused a car to be in just the right place for an accident 30 minutes later. My actions could be responsible for the death of a family tonight. But this chaos is the same chaos that caused a highly evolved ape to halt his study of fuel burn-up in a nuclear reactor long enough to save a creature not even aware of itself from starvation. If that's not indicative of there being a non-zero probability that we're not all doomed to oblivion, I have no idea what is. I'm going back to my homework.

    • That poor retarded little spider didn't realize a thing. If you read his brain through the whole process it would have said "IM A SPIDER"

      • I do what I want when I can. "Nice" doesn't enter into it.

      • I like to keep the nice things I do to myself but I think I'll share this one because it made me so happy. I was spending my lunch from work at the Starbucks down the street so I could use their free wifi when three younger clean looking guys pulled up. They were wearing band tees but looked well put together. All around me were people sipping their grande coffees and going about their business. One of the guys got out and began asking around if anyone had a dollar or two to spend on gas They were going to a show and had run out. Everyone denied him, stating they didn't have any money on them at all. So I called out to him and gave ten bucks
it was all I had :(
His whole face lit up as he thanked me several times. I wished him luck and for him to enjoy the show Everyone in that jeep was so damn happy <3

I can name a handful I've done in the past year. I was going out to pick something up from a grocery store, and saw a couple of native guys hanging around, new faces I hadn't seen before. I started talking with them learned they were from out of town. So, back with my business, I went shopping and the natives showed up in the store looking to buy some booze for the weekend. They were 10 bucks short, but I had some extra hanging around and gave it to them. I gave 900 dollars to my friend, as well as another 150, but told him that one, "fell into a black hole." I helped my friend haul a 120 year old piano into his house. I regularily go out of my way to move critters like bugs and stuff out of the way because I know other folks will step on them. While watching my friends house when he was out to get the Piano, I hauled a bunch of shit around that I knew was bugging him and in the way. I cut and hauled 10 cords worth of firewood with my friend, and then split all 10 cords by myself when my friend was off working in another province. Whatever I do for folks, or various animals, is out of respect that they too share an existence, and who am I to remove the only thing you can say truthfully that you have going is being alive. If I can, I'll save some random critter or brighten somebodies day. I'm sure I could put some more down, but I'll leave it at that.

        • Yeah, I always tend to save spiders and other insects on the larger side. Don't know why...

        • Speaking of spiders, while typing on my laptop, one appears out of nowhere climbing up the side of it, doesn't look like a common Wolf Spider, it's more yellow colored and transparent(probably came down from the ceiling out of somewhere), I grab a paper towel, crush it in that a few times, ball it up inside of another paper towel, and have the brief thought to burn it in a safe area in addition to that. I decide to at another time, and throw it in the trash. I equalized your "saving" of that spider momentarily, you're welcome.

          • On occasion I do, especially when it has anything to do with kids.

          •
Why then, would an omnipotent being capable of creating and maintaining all of creation have any pity for beings with awareness as relatively (to a god) limited as ours?
Do you think God would've created anything if He didn't have a reason to? The reason I don't have pity on an insect that I find in my house is because I don't want it there; however, I'm perfectly fine with it being outside. Therefore, because God has total dominion over the universe, He wouldn't have made something with the intent to annoy him; this means that God wouldn't have made us if He didn't want us to exist, meaning He loves us.
No. Of course not. Chaos is the only rule to this plane of reality. The spider I "saved" could easily have been eaten during the time it took to type this.
Could have, but that's what happens when you deal with beings that aren't self-aware like us. One reason we do good for other people is because they might do something good for other people in return etc., and that would make the world a better place. Good luck on your homework.

            • Not for no reason, no. I always do nice things because that's the kind of person I am. There was a family of wild rabbits that found their way into our garage to keep warm, and instead of kill them with poison like most would, I gave them food all winter then let them go in the spring.

              • I was in a car with my fam on a two hour road trip and there happened to be a wasp in the car. I took it upon my self to spare the little kids of being stung so I attempted to kill it with an electric fly zapper. (I don't usually kill wasps or bees. I just let them land on me, chill for a bit and then fly off. Plus bumble bees are cute and fuzzy) so I proceeded to electrocute this wasp but I was pissed it wouldn't die. Then I wanted to just put it out of its misery because it looked like it was in lots of pain. It still wouldn't die. I've never felt emotional for a bug till or since then. So when we got out I dumped its dying body next to a tree. The next day as I was taking out the trash I walked by and didn't see it there any more. I like to think it got better and left.

                • Yeah once I made a study guide for myself for a humanities class, it was typed up and everything. There is an e-mail list of all the students in my class on the ucf website. I sent them all the study guide. The teacher thought we all cheated because nobody got lower than a B on his exam.
