Mass Effect 4 Story Doesn't Relate to the Shepard Trilogy in Any Way.
Mass Effect 4’s story will not touch upon the events of the original story in the slightest, BioWare has revealed. Discussing the upcoming sci-fi RPG’s plot with Complex, Mass Effect 3 writer Marc Walters said, “Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever. “That’s what we’ve been deciding for a while. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can’t just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions.”
Is it possible that we could be looking at the start of a new trilogy? I sure hope so!

 • Well, that keeps it on the store shelves for me. They had a good opportunity to give us some insights at the un-stable galaxy after the events of the crucible, and wrap up all the crap they left out for us in the process. I was skeptical when when I heard they were making 4, because they always talked of ending the series after 3. And if they had done well with 3 I would have been fine and content. But they didn't. And, much like the Indoctrination theory, where they had the opportunity to recover from a potential mistake and make a big ass move that hasn't been done in gaming before, they've passed up the opportunity again, to tell a story in the post crucible firing galaxy, which is still a very turbulent time. If I had to guess it's because they would have to choose a canon ending to base things around, which would slap whoever has whatever particular ending ingrained into them as the canon one. I'm so pleased they didn't want to step on the toes of the two or three people that enjoyed the original endings.
