When I enter cos(45) into a calculator, what calculations are being made?
And don't say 1/sec(x) or equivalent trig. identities.

X is 45 and cos is a graph, so the calculator finds X on the cosine graph and gives you the equivalent value for Y Cos45 is equal to Sin45 as both graphs cross at x = 45

The ratios are pre -programmed into calculators I believe.

To put it very simply, sine is basically the number of the opposite side of your angle over the hypotenuse of the triangle, while cosine is is the adjacent side of your angle over the hypotenuse of the triangle.

Edited by HurtfulTurkey: 10/16/2013 6:13:00 PMPut simply, you cannot calculate it by hand. A calculator does it through a very complicated iterative process. You can estimate with a series (Taylor or Maclaurin), but those are approximations.

Sin is sin. It's a relationship between side ratios and angles on a right triangle. When you type it into your calculator, it's probably doing a table look up for values and using fourier series to fill in the blanks.

Edited by Simseo: 10/16/2013 4:16:01 PMThis the graph of y=sin(x). Suppose you want the value of sin(45), you look for the value of x=45, then find the equivalent y value. That y value is the value of sin(45), as y=sin(x). For example, when x=90, y=1. Therefore sin(90)=1 That is how I remember it.

the angle is the number you're putting into the sin or cos function. remember sin is opposite over hypotenuse? that's what you just found. It's the ratio of the sides of the formed right triangle with said angle (x).

Cos stands for cosine and sin stands for sine (I think) also there's tan for tangent the funny thing is I have a maths homework on this haha your getting taught by a student (if your out of school that is) I don't know how to explain it though and suggest you look online

Create (or imagine) a right triangle whose legs are of length = 1, then the hypotenuse is sqrt(2). the angles (other than the right angle) are 45 degrees, Then pick on of the 45 degree angles, and then TAN 45(degrees) = 1/1 = 1. SIN 45(degrees) = 1/sqrt(2). COS 45(degrees) = 1/sqrt(2). These are the exact ratios.
