Explain Final Fantasy to me

Is each game set in a different universe? Or are they all in the same world, but different countries? Are they related at all? Is it set in the future, or the past? Because they seem more technologically advanced but then they have magic too. Or is each game set in a different time? Just looking for a brief explanation of FF, don't need a whole paragraph for each game.

It seems like a trip down insanity row from what I can tell from various commercials and videos I've seen.

  • It's set in fallout, magical unicorns fly out and burn everything, then it's the attack of the killer rainbows... People are taking refuge as you stay out and fight.. The rainbow boss rips your body apart with his balls and you die... The end

  • It's a JRPG series that could once boast of being good. Not its just another series that has gone downhill and is a shell of its former self.

      • Each Final Fantasy follows this Formula: >Emo angsty teen is the rebel who no one likes >Is thrown against his will into a universe-changing scenario >Grudgingly accepts responsibility for actions that aren't his own >Gets depressed >meets girl >drives away girl with Emo-angst >gets more depressed >saves world.

            • Er... I believe that they're different games within the same series, such as Call of Duty Ghosts being different from Modern Warfare 1-3 being different from World at War, being different from Black Ops, being different from Call of Duty 1-3. However sometimes they do have direct sequels instead of chronologically sequenced games under the same series but not being sequels, such as Final Fantasy VII... -2 :/

They are all in different 'worlds' but are linked through a similar 'lore.' Each game should be considered a stand alone game except in the case of direct sequels like X-2 etc or in the case of that one melee brawler game. I guess you could say each game's world is like a different dimension or almost a parallel timeline or something. Each game borrows similar themes, monsters, and names from the previous though. Sort of like easter eggs in a way. Like there's always a character named Cid, Chocobos, Cactuars etc, or the Protag always has some dark mysterious past blah blah blah...

              • Each game is its own universe, the only underlying links are certain game mechanics and monster designs. They're set in a fantasy world, they could be both more and less technologically advanced at the same time, they don't really need to adhere to natural technological progression.

              • All the FF's have something to do with Crystals, so in theory they are in the same universe. There is no future or Past, it depends on the artistic vision. FF9 was more of a medieval kind, while FF10 had more japanese culture in it. All the games have different settings.

I want a FF game with real-time combat mechanics and a 3rd person view that isn't 30 ft away from your character. Something with HUD bobbing from combat and a more gritty fighting style but still with the colorful art style of FF. That would be so damn wonderful. I always liked the art style of the FF games but never the game mechanics or any of that magic bullshit.

                • Each game is set in a different universe. They may share common elements, like Crystals and a character named Cid, but otherwise they are unrelated to each other. Some of the games have their own sequels, like Final Fantasy X and X-2.

Basically think of Final Fantasy as a 'brand' of game. Kinda like its own genre. Each game is different from the rest with only a few things tying them together. Some are traditional RPG's, some are strategy games, some are mmos. They usually have their own sequels. Ex 13-1, 13-2, etc. If you're still confused then you understand it perfectly.
