With the Northern changing seasons, I'm going to add - Antifreeze. I know this is easily overlooked, but there are different types, and if not flushed and replaced every so often, it can come back to not just bite you, but cut your engine in half. I've seen radiator hoses rupture, and people think they have blown their engine, and freeze plugs popped out of the block from freezing. Also on the different types of antifreeze - Make sure what you put in is made for your vehicle. Lesson learned - My son's old Taurus I had bought used, it was his first car. It did everything it was supposed to do, but he noticed the heater was getting weaker and weaker and we could smell antifreeze in the defroster, which made the windshield wet. I thought it was simple enough, heater core. We replaced it, but only very small improvement in temp, and no more condensation when we turned the defroster on. It was getting colder in the winter and he was freezing in the car, but the antifreeze appeared fine. We finally took it to a mechanic and he instantly said - Water pump. Didn't even pop the hood. I know and trust the guy, and said have at it for I didn't have the time to invest in tearing it apart at that time. The next day we went to pick it up and the car is blowing heat like it should. He shows me the old pump. The impeller blades are almost completely missing. Turns out, the original owner poured in the wrong anti freeze into it some time earlier and ever since it was slowly dissolving the aluminum impeller blades down to nothing. The pump didn't fail, but it couldn't push any fluid around when the impeller was 1/8th it's original intended size. So READ before you pour.
