A virtual reality device called Reactive Grip allows users to feel virtual objects through a combination of software and hardware, Mashable reports.
Reactive Grip is the work of Tactical Haptics, a company that specializes in commercializing haptic technology. The controller works with the help of a physics engine that uses muscle feedback in combination with virtual reality environments. The controller takes a digital representation of whatever virtual object you're holding, measures yours hands and computes the physical force needed.
"It's essentially creating a really simple yet effective illusion that you have physical interaction with things," Tactical Haptics CEO William Provancher told Mashable. "What you experience is a combination of what's called a motion component (what you feel in your muscles) and tactile (what you feel in the skin)."
However, the controller would require consoles to be compatible with both Reactive Grip and whatever game is being played.
I'm honestly having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. I think it's just because of how stunned I am that somebody was actually make this. I mean, it's an amazing device, and if paired with the Oculus Rift and the Virtuix Omni, this has amazing potential for VR gaming. So yup, the future of gaming that is VR gaming is getting cooler and cooler every single day, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Another step closer to SAO.
-
I hope I can live long enough to see it all work.
-
Yes but how does it integrate into VR porn?
-
Just one step closer to the NervGear....
-
That would suck for people playing Minecraft and punching trees and cacti.
-
Gotta be honest... I don't understand how that would possibly work.

Edited by Infiltrat0rN7: 12/9/2013 12:23:51 AMSo what if i want to flip a tank in Halo?
-
yeah, no. VR would suck for FPS and TPS games with realistic feedback. you'd either be hit by a painball marker or an electroshock sensor.
-
i'd rather use this for porn than games
-
Lol what would happen if i put that mass driver at the end of halo reach.
-
Imagine this + Oculus Rift
-
Does this mean you can no longer be overencumbered in Fallout without getting crushed?
-
It's really more simple than it sounds. And it wouldn't be as amazing in your hand as it sounds. Basically In the bottom of that thing is a wheel that spins. If you have ever held a spinning object you would have felt resistance if you tried to move it around.

Edited by M1Silencer: 12/8/2013 11:42:14 PMI wonder if there will VR arcades in the near future that will provide all this equipment for gamers until they become widely available and cheap. By equipment I mean Oculus Rift, Virtuix Omni and this.

This is super cool! Now I'm waiting on full-body harnesses and full VR games!
