You can always sneak a little doodling on the back of scrap work in class. At least that was what I would do.
And draw on the back of tests when I had finished them. The professors got a good laugh out of some of the stuff and I didn't give myself the opportunity to get rusty.
Wacom/tablet drawing takes a good year to really adjust to so if it becomes frustrating take a little bit of time to use traditional and then come back. It's very different but lots of fun.
