Chemistry Question

Why does Lithium have a low ionization energy but a high second ionization energy?

  • Because lithium really wants to give away an electron, so it requires less energy to do so. But once it gives away 1 electron, to give away another electron when it is already stable will be pure torture for it, just as it for a noble gas to give away an electron, thus it will have a high 2nd ionization energy.
