Why do people feel the need to inform people they're muting?
Just mute them, stupid. Nobody cares that you're ignoring them. Your input is not that valuable.

Lets them know that people are not liking their posts, thus providing encouragement for them to change how they act. And to the statement that "nobody cares?" Well, given how the most commonly muted people are the folks that keep saying muting is for "cowards," I think it is safe to say they care a lot.
