I forget where exactly they talked about this but they said you can definitely run solo, possibly even complete all of the main story solo i believe. But they also said that they will have some areas (endgame content, badass dungeons, with badass loot, etc.) that you will need at least a fire team to make it through, with your life mostly intact. Like raid areas and such.
