What do you guys think of my painting?

What do you guys think of my painting? Sorry about the size and quality of the picture. Taken on an iPad. The top layer is burned so you can see through to the houndstooth underneath. I'm doing another one where there'll be circuitry through the holes.

I like it a lot, you did a great job. Most people don't understand abstract art. Vincent Van Gogh, for example, wasn't trying to paint for other people. He painted what he felt and feelings are abstract. It's very hard for someone to look at a Van Gogh painting and know exactly what he was trying to convey. (Van Gogh wasn't an Abstract painter per se, but the comparison works). Most people want art to be simple. They want to look at it and say "Okay, that's a pretty house. Cool". Abstract art is a lot more rewarding because it allows you to feel something within yourself, rather than it just being some boring, tangible object you've seen a million times in reality. That's magical because the meaning can be different from person to person-- but a house is just a house. You've poured your feelings onto the canvass, and that's an awesome thing that a lot of people (including myself) aren't capable of doing. Some people may not care enough to take a second look at it, and that's okay. The ones who do, well, they may not understand what you're going for, but maybe, if they're lucky, they'll associate it with something meaningful within themselves. HUGE EDIT.

  • it looks like you put a variety of tropical birds on the road and ran them over with a truck creating a flat mixture of feathers........ i like it, its very abstract and colorful, the wavy almost marble like pattern really fits in well too.

        • Personally, I'm not a very big fan of abstract art, so it's not really my thing. Compositionally, on the other hand, it's pretty well done. Good variety in color, shape, and form without throwing a damn rainbow on the thing. That being said, there may be a bit too much of a rainbow scheme, and I personally would have left at least one more color out, maybe the greens? The cool background colors are pretty well balanced by the warmer colors in the foreground. The focal point (largest burnt hole) isn't in the exact middle of the painting, and appears to be following the rule of thirds from top to bottom. Variety in the size of the holes keeps the focal point from being lost, but also keeps it from standing out too much. The wavy texture in the cool colors keeps it all tied together, and I personally like that texture.

          • I'm not sure if I like the pattern underneath but the rest is really quite awesome.
