  • I've referenced this vid too many times and can't keep going back to listen to it over and over... so: My Cliff Notes: Podcast Sept24,13 =============== First for DeeJ Urk John Stevan aka GT: 'Halcylon' & Graphic Designer @ BNG Josh Hammerick: sandbox designers Tom Doyle: Art Lead & resident gunsmith / expert Tom Doyle 1st - industrial design specialist (guns / vehicle design team) Halo a military space fantasy: - guns had affordance & Polarity - Affordance: I know how it behaves before I use it - Polarity: good guy guns and bad guy guns Destiny also a space fiction: - has a 'certain amount' of good / bad guns, but... - trying to tell a much larger story [than Halo] in the artwork of the guns / vehicles Gun design comes from several different inspirations: - Name of gun - Investiment goal driven - Visual story (horns, dripping, ornaments) Duke (hand cannon revolver) is not an exotic Guns seem to have rich unique animations with their own history / feel / scuffs / customizations Most of what public has seen of city... up in towers... up in "Mt Olympus" We've thought about gun bizarres / master craftsmen down in pedestrian level of City working on your Duke Guns have 'implied fiction' by designer - imagine craftsmen putting his own seal on his hand made work - see drawing boards for notes and further info on bungie.net that aren't in game Guns are not procedurally / randomly generated in game: - originally entertained procedural construction - ruled out procedural due to lack of 'unique' feel of the resulting firearms - parts are however reused on different sidearmsT They've lost count on how many different arms in game Every gun in Destiny is hand crafted Every gun you find is hand named in Destiny In Halo: - all Spartan Lasers [etc] were made to spec - all felt the same - Heavy constraints on creativity - all are Covenant / Military... found weapons In Destiny: - every weapon you find is 'Excaliber' to you - it is 'yours' to be owned, customized, unique, etc - you won't just find it in a case, but out in the world as a treasure and reward - you are reclaiming what was lost and is now yours again [human race?] - all weapons are "legend", we are only limited by our own imagination, so "no constraints" Tom's Favorite weapon "Last Word" the exact opposite of Thorn Last Word (lawman's badge type of hand cannon) is the ying / yang to Thorn First time we've done a tried and true 'revovler' in game Discussions about locking back the hammer on "The Last Word" while looking at someone in game - simply as a way to express yourself in game Influences - everything! "How do we get something the size of a battleship and fit that into your back pocket?" In Halo, we simply 'said' you were fighting humanity... In Destiny, it [fighting for humanity] is literally on your doorstep and something felt real Lots of 'fish hooks' in the game to lure you to different places and game modes - Weapons / Gear only available in certain modes / activies / length of progress - Example PvP only E3 weapon [Red Death] - Weapons are increadibly unique with developers - so far, nobody has same weapon "everyone's a snowflake" Josh Hammerick - gameplay designer, makes the weapons powerful / weak in game We want you to form a relationship with your weapon in Destiny In Halo: - 2 weapon system - you had 7 basic guns... - 15 ARs on the map, but all basically the same, etc... In Destiny: - you find an AR that someone else might eventually find, but both take it a differet way - we want you to develop the weapon and spend much longer time with the weapon - 3 weapon system you have out on person "At the Ready" (skip to vid: 39:50) SIGNIFICANT POINTS ...but adds to that - the weapons on your Avatar in inventory as well! - Can have 2 secondary weapons that I'm moving between and leveling - Weapons are not "easily accessible" [from inventory on Avatar?] - We do "some things" to talk you out of switching to them mid combat" - We don't want you to walk into an encounter with every gun in the game - You can go into your Avatar build in the middle of Competitive MP - You could have an Assault Rifle, Pulse Rifle & Scout Rifle in your bag but be using an auto rifle and at any point switch to the Scout Rifle, but we are doing stuff to talk you out of doing that... - I don't want you changing in the middle of an Encounter, however... - Between encounter-to-encounter you can absolutely switch Specials are about "special occasions", DeeJ has a different definition of what that means - brief ammo discussion about 'finding' ammo for special / heavy Josh likes - Hunter, with Golden Gun - the hand cannon, feels like DMR role with its burst fire Not looking for a weapon spawn in Destiny You are looking for ammo in Competitive MP in Destiny You lose your HEAVY ammo in Competitive MP in Destiny, if you have any Your ammo is NOT predicated based upon the weapon you spawn with in Competitive MP *Makes me super happy that people are freaking out about their heavy ammo when they die now* People note that they need to use their heavy ammo before they die Considering forcing a 'reload' animation as well when you get the ammo - being sure to get away with ammo once you find it - needs support when finding Heavy Ammo - Josh noted that he 'hopes' they ship this way Everytime they play PvP, something is different right now as things are changing DAILY right now!! - NOTE: As of Sept '13, Competitive MP gaming parameters are NOT in stone by any measure - Pulse Rifle was awsome then nerfed in Competitive MP for example - Only making tweaks and incrimental changes, but has significant impacts Getting into an "Ammo Crate" was mentioned in competitive MP discussion Getting killed to get more primary ammo, a Deej approach in one build Nobody has to start with a plama pistol / rocket launcher You never know what you are up against, you have to pay attention to the whole scheme of Destiny You may encounter a combination / range of gear / guns / focus [team?] you've never encountered before <long silence> Interesting outtakes, that were not taken out? Enjoy,
