...would it be better to tell the public? On one hand the people are in panic, rioting, and are miserable for a week or two. Many people die and society falls apart. On the other hand the people continue on as if nothing is going to happen, civilization stays together and humanity still has hope. Some will say that the people are being treated as ignorant sheep.
You must choose one, and nobody will survive when the meteor hits earth, all humanity and life as we know it on earth will be stomped out of existence. All attempts at survival fail.
Note: DO NOT WORM OUT DAMMIT

Tell everyone so I can convince the girls nextdoor to have a massive sex party.

I'm telling everybody, then I'm gonna loot and commit crimes against your women.
-
I'd say let as much of the world know that can be contacted.

We would only have to slow it down by like a few inches per second and it would miss. So your saying if we loaded 100 nukes onto a shuttle an launched it at the asteroid, it wouldn't work?
-
How would I get the message out? Would people believe me if I told them?
-
I send Bruce Willis up there

*meter

then we were the aluns

I get to choose?

Tell everyone about 1 day before the asteroid hits.
-
But, I don't wanna die working...

I'll wear a superman costume and fly fast into the meteor.
I AM A GOD
"Oh no a meter is going to hit the earth!"

Edited by Bolt: 2/24/2014 7:42:58 AM
If a meteorite was about to hit the earth...
It's a trick question, as the Earth has already been struck in this scenario. A "meteorite" is a solid piece of debris from outer space that survives impact with whatever planet it hits. A "meteoroid" is a solid piece of debris from outer space that has not yet impacted with Earth. Given this information, we can assume from the problem statement that, since the object is a meteorite, the Earth has already been struck by it and the event was so minor that most people don't know it happened. One could presume the "collision" that is to occur in two weeks time is simply the lifting and dropping of the object by human intervention. Given that the object is undoubtedly less massive than it was before it fell through the atmosphere the first time, even if it was lifted all the way back into space it is unlikely that it would cause significant damage via the second impact. It would seem the question is really about whether or not you would attempt to incite panic by taking advantage of the general public's lack of knowledge regarding astronomical terms. Given the answers in this thread, the odds of success should one pursue this option seem high.

>implying the meteor will actually hit us

Well, considering we would see an asteroid big enough for an extinction level event, it wouldn't really matter if the government told us or not. So, I go with them telling us.
-
Is this purely hypothetical OP, or are you trying to tell us something?
-
They burn in earths atmosphere on the way down.
-
If everyone dies why tell them?
-
Tell, I have faith in humanity.

I'd call Bruce Willis and tell him that his time has come.
Someone please get this movie reference.
