Chrysler is in the midst of having 93 first-generation Vipers destroyed. The cars were originally donated to schools around the country for use in educational programs. These preproduction Vipers were some of the first that were ever stitched together. Now Chrysler wants them dead.
Why? Blame the lawyers. These cars were never meant to be street-legal. They were built without emission control systems or speed limiters.
So, if you enjoy seeing a beautiful piece of automotive purposefully torn to pieces by a backhoe claw, have at it.
Personally I would have just made them emissions legal and sold them, but that's just me.
Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go pour a little 93 octane on the ground to honor the fallen.

I thought this was pretty sad.
At least two of the cars managed to make it to public roads and—big shock—were involved in accidents. Since Chrysler still technically owns the cars, the company is liable for any damages. The resulting lawsuits have cost the automaker millions of dollars.
The reality is that a couple of morons are responsible for this.

What's with the government and crushing cars? Do they get some sort or sick twisted fun out of it?

I've never been a big viper fan... It's still kinda sad though.

that's sad to see pieces of history go like that. I'd say destroy all but 3-5 and auction them off to some museums.

Send 'em on over to the Corvette Museum I'm sure the Corvette guys wouldn't mind allowing a little piece of history to stay within their walls, and really a brand that got GM's head out of their ass about half assing Corvettes as they did through the 80's.

I'm not really a car person, but that's appalling. One of the few cars that I like the look of and they are smashing them up like that?! >:[
