I've found that I like to start off with a stick figure in proportion to things like shoulder width or the shape of legs, and the length of the body and stuff like that, then do a rough outline over the stick figure, keeping everything tight and in place so that the shape and proportions are decent. And then I start sketching in a few details and basic shapes of the frame so I can get a sense of where everything will be. And then when I feel like I've done enough of that, I start putting more detail in.
Took me a little while to find out how I liked doing things. I use a lot of lessons and help from people online for advice in getting started with drawings, but I find that it's impossible for me to take lessons where somebody tells you to do something a particular way. Stuff doesn't click like it would if I eventually came into the realization and method of doing something myself. So all that leaves is experimentation by myself using loose references of what I've seen or already know.
But so far, my painstaking method seems to hold true for me.
