The essence of net neutrality is that ISPs such as AT&T and Comcast don't restrict, influence or otherwise meddle with the choices consumers make. The traditional form of net neutrality which was recently overturned by a Verizon lawsuit is important, but insufficient.
This weak net neutrality isn't enough to protect an open, competitive Internet; a stronger form of net neutrality is required. Strong net neutrality additionally prevents ISPs from charging a toll for interconnection to services like Netflix, YouTube, or Skype, or intermediaries such as Cogent, Akamai or Level 3, to deliver the services and data requested by ISP residential subscribers. Instead, they must provide sufficient access to their network without charge.
If Netflix was delivering, for example, 10 Terabytes of data in 2012 and increased demand causes them to deliver 20 Terabytes of data in 2013, they will have to build, or hire someone to build, the capacity necessary to handle that increased volume of traffic.

AT&T wants websites to pay ISPs to do the things that the ISPs are supposed to do in the first place.
This is why ISPs should be regulated! They don't give a damn about the customers.
Data is data. It shouldn't matter what website it comes from. And it's not a finite resource like gasoline.
tl;dr: AT&T are forcing Netflix to pay for data that the customers have already paid for and they're refusing to upgrade their services. Verizon can now block and slow down access to certain sites.

When Google inevitably launches their own cellular network, they will all be very sorry. First, because google fiber is used by pretty much everyone anywhere near where it's available. Second, because Google has the means to do so, and while it would be small in the beginning, their network would have the most advanced towers across the board, assuming they don't just start with satellite coms.
-
this and there needs to be regulations. it's illegal to refuse mail service to a rural area in the US. same should go for email, since they don't offer high speeds in rural areas.
-
And Google is going to show them all that they're dumbasses, and nobody will have anything but Google Fiber if they go along with this.

What I don't get is why carriers don't just raise rates if they aren't making as much money as they want? It's not like we have alternatives to the monopolies they hold. I'd rather just pay more than have them pick and choose what sites they feel like ransoming.

and in other news, the NSA is still collecting your internet/phone info

Honestly though, there is no reason for us to have such terrible internet quality. Companies can easily afford to spread their reach and boost speed. Everything is bullshit.

Anybody old enough to remember when government experimented with deregulating energy monopolies? Enron started shutting down perfectly functional power plants during heat waves on the West coast to drive up energy prices. It's almost as if we didn't learn a damn thing from that.

Communism and socialism are here to stay. All thanks to the "Low Information Voters". I've been preaching this stuff for years and you morons called me crazy. The problem is as I said it would be...a little too late and a little too little to change things now.
-
I just checked all the major ISPs, Comcast, ATT, Verizon. It's been 6 years and all their services are still unavailable at my location. And I live in the suburbs of the city where you think big ISPs would be expanding. But nooope.

Old news. Besides, we can't do anything with the corporations running America now anyway.
-
You know, hearing about things like this make me glad I live in England.

I find it hilarious that all these companies controlling the cables think Netflix should be the ones to pay money. The internet should be upgraded everyday. The technology should be progressing all the time. They need to keep up with the times and the current situation of how much bandwidth people use. Instead of targeting specific companies, they should be seeing that bandwidth usage is increasing and they should keep up.

Old news. And sadly, nobody gives a shit anymore.
