Why is Lucario so popular?

Can someone explain this? I don't know why he was in Brawl and I'm baffled that he's returning in SSB4. I get why Mewtwo is popular. Is there a furry obsession with Lucario?

I think they started promoting pearl and diamond with lucario. I THINK it was the first pokemon shown of the new dex
