I've owned both a Lee Enfield No.4 mk1* and a Mauser. The Enfield, with its 10 round detachable box magazine and its super quick and smooth cock-on-close bolt operation is absolutely the superior infantry weapon, while the Mauser, with its 5 shot internal mag and much slower and clunky bolt makes for a decent hunting rifle. The U.S. made Springfield, and as far as I know, most of the other early 20th century, and even modern bolt action rifles are descended from the slower functioning Mauser bolt style. Once you cycle the actions of the different bolt types with your own hands the advantages of the Enfield are obvious.
