'Poor people join the military to die or get free college'

This has been going around FB, and I'm just speechless. It's such a remarkably stupid and insulting image that I can't even think of how to respond. Do any of you actually think this is true? That the military is some kind of "hunger games" suicide job that will kick you to the curb with no experience or education worth more than a "shitty desk job"?

  • No...people in the airforce make quite a bit of money. But yes i do think its a way to get a college degree if you arent very wealthy.

  • I'm actually going into the military for the college...Sorry I'm not like every other leech that gets money from their parents because they're rich.

  • I thought about going into the military for this very reason. ROTC programs are helpful as hell.

  •
That the military is some kind of "hunger games" suicide job that will kick you to the curb with no experience or education worth more than a "shitty desk job"?
The worst part is that the only people who have a chance are the hot teenage girl who is somewhat naive about how brutal the "real world" she lives in is and her fierce and determined boyfriend who also has a soft side. Also, their hair stays perfect the whole time for some reason.

  • I don't think its that offensive; she may be representing the military to be more dangerous than it actually is, but I've never been in the military.

  • Yeah that's pretty messed up... Why do so many have a hard time believing that many join because they feel called to serve? I know it's not everyone's reason but it Its a very common one.

  • It's a tool used to bully the world with senseless and criminal wars we often times start or have no business or authority in. Yes, many people in the military are worthless scum doing it for the money, my cousin is guilty of this and he's one of the most worthless pieces of criminal scum I know of. We have enough children to die needlessly already.

  • That's more true than it should be. Besides for that last part, as you can get a much better job than a "shitty office job" with a college degree. And serving in the military means you're probably even more likely to get a job.

    • Considering my grand father is a multi-millionaire and my mother makes 70,000 a year and my father makes 84,000 a year. No. I joined to serve my country. Unlike this -blam!- I have pride in my countries military and understand it's purpose and the need for it to exist. The funniest thing is that the majority of E-5's and above likely have a higher IQ and more degrees then she could hope to achieve.

    • It's actually really true... Most of my friends are joining the military for that reason.

      • Ya joing the military is for sure one big drive to support your decision on Military. Not because your poor but because it's too damn expensive. Chances are that the military may even hire you if you succeed in college. That's what the recruiters at my school told us anyway. Pretty interesting when they showed recent photos of the Flood in Minot,ND. Took a picture of a Hummer hust cruising through the water. And the water was up I the windshield which was pretty neat

I was the most middle-class person in my training platoon. The rest were dirt poor. Then I left and now I'm £19,000 in debt with sweet -blam!- all to show for it, and they all have steady jobs :P

            • What is insulting about it? Many join the military as a means to pay for college.

                • Is everybody in #offtopic really this stupid? Ok, last time: she is saying that college is so expensive that the poor see the military as the only means to pay for it. Since you can die in the military, it makes it kind of like the Hunger Games, in that you have to risk your life to escape poverty. The punchline is that the escape means that most jobs today are shitty desk jobs. She isn't bashing the military. She's bashing how expensive college is, and how the GI Bill is so heavily pushed on the poor.
