I'm thinking of getting Minecraft, but before I do, I want to know what I can do in it. Can I realize any artistic vision I want? Are there any limits to what I can do? Could I build the Palace of Versailles or the Empire State Building? Is building tedious or efficient? Are the pieces unlimited, or will I be encountering annoying part limits like in Halo's Forge?
Tell me all about Minecraft, anything notable that comes to mind.
Edit: I've had Minecraft 360 for nearly a year now though, this thread be old
Can I realize any artistic vision I want?
In a sense. Anything you can transfer into the blocky aesthetic of the game is possible.
Are there any limits to what I can do?
Yes. The world height, from the bottom bedrock level to the highest point in the sky, is 256 blocks. If you're getting the game for the PC, the world can literally stretch on for longer than the equivalent size of the earth (using one block as one meter.)
Could I build the Palace of Versailles or the Empire State Building?
Short answer? Yes.
Is building tedious or efficient?
Building obscenely large structures and altering large swaths of land are not feasable without mods. With specially designed mods, it becomes much less tedious by allowing you to use all kinds of world editing tools. It's like going from kindergarten finger painting to professional Impressionist art.
