Boy Scouts shut down troop for refusing to banish gay scoutmaster

Hoo boy.
The Boy Scouts of America, one of the country’s largest and oldest youth organizations, has shut down a Seattle troop and pack for refusing to remove an openly homosexual scoutmaster. In a letter sent last week from BSA attorney Steven P. McGowan to Seattle attorney Peter J. Mullenix, the Scouts fault Rainier Beach United Methodist Church for allowing Geoff McGrath to serve in violation of their policy that "does not allow open or avowed homosexuals to serve as volunteer adult leaders." The chapter is being closed "as a result of this refusal to comply with the policies, guidelines, rules and regulations of the Boy Scouts of America," according to the letter. It goes on to say Troop 98 may "no longer use the Scouting program or any of its registered marks or brands." However, the Rev. Monica Corsaro, minister of the Seattle troop's host church, told Yahoo News on Monday that the 15 Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will meet this week as though nothing had changed. But will they wear their uniforms? "Those boys paid for those uniforms," Corsaro said. "It will not be me telling them to not wear their uniforms." Click image to read the full letter. McGrath, 49, made headlines last month when BSA leadership said they learned through a news story that he was gay. The National Council immediately removed McGrath from its rolls for "deliberately injecting" his sexuality into the job. McGrath maintains the organization had known all along about his open support of gay rights. Last May, the Scouts broke 103 years of tradition when it decided to allow openly gay members in its ranks. The historic change, however, did not include accepting gay scout leaders. McGrath is believed to be the first leader to lose his position since last year’s policy change. Corsaro defied the BSA’s request to remove McGrath. "Based on our religious principles, we will continue to act as an autonomous church that does not discriminate," said Corsaro, according to a press release from Scouts for Equality, a national advocacy organization. The church and McGrath are represented by the same Seattle attorney. On Monday, Corsaro told Yahoo News that they are weighing their legal options on how to proceed. Zach Wahls, executive director of Scouts for Equality, called the move to revoke the troops’ charter startling. "The Boy Scouts' decisions only serve to hurt a group of boys who need the values and leadership of someone like Scoutmaster McGrath," Wahls wrote in a statement. "Unfortunately, the BSA's decision calls into question its commitment to leadership and values by perpetuating an outmoded policy rooted in fear and discrimination. History will show that today’s announcement is a self-inflicted wound." The BSA said they will place members of Troop 98 in other units. "We are saddened by this development, but remain committed to providing all youth with the best possible Scouting experience where the Scouting program is the main focus," BSA spokesman Deron Smith said in a statement. "We have already identified a new chartered organization to sponsor the units and are contacting the parents and leaders of the units to inform them of the change." McGrath, according to Scouts for Equality, was disappointed by the Scouts’ action to shutter the troop. "Pastor Corsaro specifically sought out someone with my Scouting background to help get these units off the ground, and her church is now being told to violate their religious convictions," McGrath said in a statement. "It's unconscionable and irreverent."
Just going to tell you from personal experience: Repressing yourself is more detrimental to your health than being open about it. Also, here is the boy scout oath:
On my honor, I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
Now, I'm a Catholic and have read the Commandments more times than I needed to because of Bible Study class in elementary school. (Private Catholic school) Whatever happened to "Love thy neighbor"? Hell, they allowed openly gay scouts, yet they don't allow openly gay scout leaders. That's a bit disturbing.

  • Thanks for this useful news update CNN, and they banned him for the same reason public school teachers get fired for stating their religious opinion; because people think that he is going to make his scouts follow his moral beliefs, and probably because most 6th grade boys think that he would molest them.
Hell, they allowed openly gay scouts, yet they don't allow openly gay scout leaders. That's a bit disturbing.
You know why they allow openly gay Scouts right? Because they didn't, knew one kid was gay, didn't let him on that would be a problem, let him finish his Eagle Project, and then promptly told him to take a flying -blam!- at a rolling hole and didn't give him his Eagle. And people were -blam!-ing pissed. Signatures were signed, correlated into huge boxes and delivered to the BSA. People sent THEIR Eagle Badges to this kid. And eventually the BSA looked, saw that they were going to potentially loose more members by catering to their ultra conservatives, and caved. But they half-assed it and only allowed gay kids but not gay Scoutmasters because they were trying to pander to both sides and/or were trying to do the bare minimum to get the public off their back for being a bunch of bigots. I'm an Eagle and the BSA makes me sad. The Ultra Conservative Christian Scouts makes me even sadder.

    • The Boy Scouts should make a choice: either stop discriminating, or stop taking government funding. If they take the funding, they shouldn't be allowed to religiously discriminate because that would start to blur the line of separation of church and state. If they are totally private, they can do whatever they want. I'm sure the power of the dollar will make them see reason if that ultimatum is presented to them.

    •
Whatever happened to "Love thy neighbor"?
"And you will love them as if they were your flesh and blood." "But Jesus, what if they're gay or worship no gods?" "Did I -blam!-ing stutter bitch? I said you will love them."

      • Awesome. We don't need homosexuals teaching kids to do anything.
Funny, it sounds like the corporate office is the only one injecting sexuality into the situation. The marines still swear to "God and Corps" but they allow openly homosexual servicemen and women to join. It's just kind of silly the BSA hasn't moved on yet.

        • The two people who are stalking me on this site are the ones I had to mute and report for disrespect. I used to be in the BSA, and now, I'm technically still considered one, only as an adviser. This stuff right here makes me rethink my decision of being an adviser. It's sad, really. I learned a lot of core values of camping and equality while in the BSA, but stuff like this makes me ashamed of the organization.

Good on them for standing by their scoutmaster despite the archaic pricks running the organisation.
"Based on our religious principles, we will continue to act as an autonomous church that does not discriminate,"
If only more people shared that view.

        • What the hell? Gay Scouts are allowed now (finally), but if a Scoutmaster says he's gay, it apparently warrants the shutdown of an entire -blam!-ing troop? I thought the BSA was making progress with the archaic anti-gay rule. Is the Scout Law not "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, clean, and reverent"? Does the Oath not say that as Scouts, we must help other people at all times? If these people are telling us to follow these ideals, I expect them to as well. I did not become an Eagle Scout to perpetuate such bigotry and close-mindedness.

        • As a boy scout myself, I'm disappointed in the BSA, but I'm proud of that troop for supporting their scoutmaster despite demands not to. I absolutely think the BSA should be more inclusive, it's good for scouting and for youth. I know people on Bnet tend to be hostile to scouting because of the religious bullshit that's been pushed by increases Mormon involvement in recent decades, and because they're not into commitment or physical activity, but scouting is really good for young people. It inspires confidence and encourages scouts to do the right thing, no matter what, and it teaches important leadership skills. What the grumpy old white guys in charge like to do to suppress gays does not really represent what scouting is all about, and I hope one day to see more tolerant folks in charge, who will do the right thing with or without media and popular pressure.

        • They only recently allowed homosexual scouts... and a large reason to why they will not allow homosexual leaders is irrational fears from parents that they will become the new “Catholic Priest” joke. It’s a sad state of affairs.
