Activision's $500 million investment

A $500 million investment by Activision was rumored but has recently been confirmed by Activision themselves which, according to Activision, includes...
"marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs".
Activision's deal with Bungie for Destiny spans a decade, during which multiple games and downloadable add-ons are expected to be released in the universe. The contract between the two parties stipulated that Bungie retained the rights to the Destiny intellectual franchise, while Activision secured exclusive distribution rights. According to Pete Parsons in an interview with Eurogamer...
"The game design is our own thing. Obviously this is an ambitious game and there are more than 500 people sitting in this building. They believed in that vision and wanted us to take the time to get it right. That's a huge deal that goes all the way up to Thomas Tipple and Bobby Kotick and the board of their company. "
This will be Bungie's first Sony platform game in over 10 years. Parson continued...
"We haven't shipped a game on a Sony platform for a long time. They have a ton of expertise with PlayStation, certainly with PlayStation 3. Their Demonware team is fantastic. And we've worked with multiple development teams across Activision to help us with problems we needed another set of eyes on or hands on. So while it is our vision and our game, they've been a big partner. And then you get to the part where they clearly know how to hit it out of the park, their ability to market and distribute games and to really have a single, cohesive voice is pretty impressive, and was a huge element to why we selected them as a publisher."
With this high of an investment according to Reuters, in order for Destiny to break even it would need to sell ~ 15-16 million copies at $60/copy but remember the first installment of Destiny is just the foundation for a 10 year long-term IP which includes multiple games and DLC to expand Destiny's universe. We have yet to see information on the Limited Edition Destiny games or consoles which gamers (if you're like me) are holding out for. I expect to see sales increase dramatically when LE information is finally released. With the stakes and bar set so high do you think Bungie/Activision can pull this off? I believe they can. • $500 million? Let's be honest. Destiny WILL NOT be selling 16 million copies. It's a brand new IP and there are plenty of people who don't know about it, let alone wanting to buy it. Casual gamers normally make up a game's majority sales, and none of the casual gamers I know of are interested in any game but their annual dose of CoD and FIFA. I would be very surprised if this game breaks 10 million in sales. Furthermore, the main MMO market, PC isn't even getting this game - and as a primarily PC gamer, I know of many who would buy this game for their PC in a heartbeat, but not for their consoles. It's going to be more than just an uphill struggle for Bungie and Activision to sell enough copies to make a profit. If the budget is $500 million, I think Activision will be relying on the people who've bought the game to buy microtransactions *shiver* and micro-DLCs, or rather, the bane of gaming. (and just for clarification, the Bungie-Activision Contract DOES say that there will be microtransactions and DLC in the game, which really f***ing sucks.) Basically, this isn't good. I guess we're just gonna have to wait and see.
