Comic fans: Where do you start?

If you were to recommend a good place to start getting into comics, either Marvel or DC, where would you recommend? I'm talking specific issues. Also, do you buy them in a store, or mostly through downloads?

Free comic book day was last Saturday, that would have helped haha. Read Boom! Comics. They're pretty good.
