Ants are highly social creatures who live in colonies made up of hundreds or thousands of members. Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are a highly aggressive species that have a painful bite, and they can destroy crops and eradicate birds, lizards, and ground-dwelling bees from an area.
Humans often use poisons to get rid of these ants to protect their home and property, but one artist is using something different: molten aluminum. The aluminum is carefully poured into the top of the ant hill, and the metal goes throughout all of the tunnels and settles into all of the crevices. Once the aluminum has cooled and the dirt has been washed away, the cast makes a perfect representation of the nest’s internal structure. Yes, all of the ants die in the process, but given the ants’ invasive nature and the abundance of the species, it’s hardly worth losing any sleep over.
Making models of the nests allow scientists to study differences between species, as not all ants make the same nests. For instance, carpenter ants have simple nests with only a few tunnels and these red imported fire ants have highly complex networks of rooms and tunnels.
While these casts are put up for sale from time to time, this particular cast is not for sale as of yet. If you’d like to be updated as to if/when it is made available, you can follow the artist’s Facebook page for updates.

This is pretty awesome. And buying one of these would be pretty cool. They look awesome.
It would be awesome to do something like this your own.

That is freaking awesome

Science.

Edited by qy: 5/10/2014 4:03:15 PM>people disliking this because genocide This rustles me because they're an invasive species which means that they shouldn't exist there in the first place. Also, killing a few anthills isn't genocide. Not like fire ants are going to go extinct because some artist killed a few ants.

It looks like a Christmas tree! :3
OF DEATH!
>12,003 dislikes lol, are people really butthurt over fire ants dying?
-
This is extremely cold.
-
Freakin' sweet! I've seen this done with cement on animal planet, I think it was in Africa.

Edited by Masterful: 5/10/2014 3:50:28 AMThe idiots comparing this to genocide, or the holocaust. They're insects. Get over yourself and get off the "moral high ground". It just makes you look really stupid.
-
Hah, -blam!- you, ants.
-
That's really cool. Always wondered what an entire nest would look like. But at the same time, that's got to be a really shitty way to go.
-
I know how I'm getting rid of my ants now
-
Edited by Sqwithy: 5/10/2014 2:39:14 AMSeen it before. And I still think it's the best way to get rid of an ant hill.
-
I wish I could do that to the ants in my house.
-
Oooooold, but still cool as -blam!-.
-
Cool.
-
Really kewl looking, though I remember scientists doing something similar with army ants or something, and the nest was a good 20m wide a a couple metres deep.
still kinda feel sorry for the ants though :(
My college bio professor had one of these casts. 'Twas sweet.

Bump for ants
