She was in a position of power over him. At that point, if she was willing to grade boost, she was probably ready to drop his grades back down if he did not comply with her sexual demands. Gender is irrelevant here, and we don't know anything about what the dude was like. He could've been a stoner frat boy who got the score of his life when his teacher offered to raise his grades for sex, or he could've been a desperate guy who was struggling to keep his grades up and saw no other way out than to submit to his teacher's advances, whether he liked it or not. The law airs on the side of caution in these things, simply because of the distribution of power. It's very easy for an authority figure to force someone into acting like it was all okay, using whatever leverage they have against the student.
