There is hope once again for the PC crowd, we shall not come crawling to Facebook for a paltry, non-gamer VR system, and it will only benefit the Sony crowd since their VR system will have to compete!
Valve’s prototype virtual reality headset was originally revealed to select developers earlier this year behind closed doors, but the company is now starting to demonstrate an updated version in public. At a VR meetup in Boston yesterday, attendees were given an even closer look at Valve’s new headset. It appears that the latest prototype has changed significantly, with a separate camera used to track spots on the head-mounted display. It’s a similar system to Oculus’ latest Crystal Cove concept, and marks a change from Valve’s previous approach of using QR codes and a camera attached to the head-mounted display to improve tracking.
Reddit and Twitter users have posted a variety of photos showing the new headset, which doesn’t look as bulky as some of Valve’s earlier concepts. Valve has a Dota 2 demo "where you see the entire game arena sitting on a table in front of you and can bend down to inspect any piece of the action," according to one Reddit user. It’s still not clear if Valve will ever bring its virtual reality headset to market, despite the updates to its hardware. Valve has been a big proponent of VR, even working closely with Oculus, but its own headset is just a concept for now. With Facebook’s recent acquisition of Oculus, Valve's concept hardware could take a bigger step towards reality.
Praise Lord Gaben!

But Valve's VR headset won't be available for consumers from what I've heard.
-
T-thank you, Lord Gaben.

If Half-Life 3 is an exclusive...

I always imagined something you wore on your head that placed a virtual world that you can see and feel and smell. We're getting so close to it. :*)

Won't these things make me short sighted?

Um, I think the Valve prototype is what persuaded Zuckerberg to buy Oculus... Oculus and Valve have been working together closely on VR. In fact the low-persistence feature that's in the 2nd dev kit was put forth by Valve's Michael Abrash (who now works at Oculus after the Facebook deal - that deal means Oculus can afford to bring on more experts to make the product better). A lot of Valve R&D guys have left Valve to go work at Oculus since the deal. So the idea that you will be able to buy this Valve VR headset as a competitor to Oculus Rift seems a bit... far-fetched. I don't consider strapping a screen to your face as VR.

This shit can't possibly be good for your eyes

Praise be unto Gaben.

The 1st generation of VR is not gonna be worth anyone's time.

Seems like this is more of a reference design than an actual consumer product. I'm glad they're committed to the tech, though. VR has the potential to be huge.
